ATENT IMPROVEMENT IN SAWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 167,561, dated September 7, 1875; application filed July 24, 1H75.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CORNELIUS PEAS; and GEORGE W. WHITAGRE, both of Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sawing- Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters andiigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of our sawing-machine; and Fig. 2 isa plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the crank-shaft.
This invention has relation to sawing-machines which are especially adapted to be operated by hand and itconsists in the construct-ion and novel arrangement of the doublecrank levers and treadles in connection with the driving-wheel, the pinion shaft carrying the fly wheel and crank, the saw lever, and connecting-rod, all as hereinafter fully shown and described.
The object of this invention is to provide means whereby the power of a man can be exerted with ease to himself, and at the same time with great effect in driving a cross-cut saw, which is, as ordinarily practiced, a very laborious and irksome occupation.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the frame of my machine, which is designed to be supported above the ground or bottom ot'a pit by means ot'the legs B, or otherwise. This frame is made in the rectangular form, and is provided with longitudinal beams G and transverse beams D D the latter of which is designed to serve as a platform or seat for the workman. A central transverse beam,D is also provided, from which extends upward the fulcrum E, to which are pivoted the driving-levers F, whereof the handles extend over the seat D in suitable position to be easily worked by the'occupant of the seat. Gindicates-the quarter-crank shaft, and G the double crank, to which the connecting-rods a from the levers 1+ are attached. This shaft is seated in bearings'b on thelongitudinal beams O, and serves to communicate motion to the large driving-gear H, which is keyed thereon. Kreprescnts the pinion-shaft, and c the pinion, which engages with the gear wheel H. To one end of this shaft is attached the fly L, and the other :end is provided with the crank 61, which communicates motion, through the connecting-rod e or pitman, to the sawlever M, which is pivoted to the frame at g. N indicates brackets, which are secured to the transverse beam D at the base of the fulcrum E. To these brackets are pivoted the treadlebars T, which extend within a convenient dis- .tance of the cross-beam D, and are connected with the driving-levers F by rods h.
In this machine the power is designed to be applied in the direction most convenient to the workman and the arrangement of the levers and treadles, which are intended to be worked together, has direct reference to the quartering position of the cranks of the shaft, in order that four motions may be given in a positive manner, thereby overcoming the deadpoints.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The sawing machine, having the levers F and treadles T connected by rods h, and the quarter-crank shaft G, saw-crank, shaft, pitman, and saw-lever M, arranged to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
CORNELIUS PEASE. GEORGE W. WHITAORE.
Witnesses LEOPOLD LEVY, ABRAHAM FALK.
