MOI.
Application filed December 18, 1824. Serial No. 756,700.
This invention relates to mops and particularly to a dusting or oil mop in which a fabric swab'is removably secured to a swab supporting and stiffening frame.
Ordinarily the swab is tied to the stiffening frame or head by strings, tapes or similar fastening devices and not infrequently these fastening devices become knotted so it is diflicult to untie them.
My invention contemplates a stiffening frame or head with expansible spring fingers adapted to engage pockets in the swab-so that when the fingers are expanded they will fasten the swab to the head or vice versa and and when the fingers are contracted, the swab can be easily removed for substitution or for cleaning.
The novelty of the invention will be apparent by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a mop constructed in accordance with my invention, the frame or head being shown partly withdrawn from the bag.
Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view of the mop frame or head, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detailed View of the swab, part being broken away to show the position of one of the spring fingers in engaging position.
he swab l is ordinarily formed of double thickness to provide a bag-like structure with an opening or slit 2 in one end for the introduction'of the stiffening frame or head. Near the ends of the bag-like structure are finger receiving pockets 3 and 4 formed by stitching 5 and 6 to receive the spring fingers 7 and 8 on the stiffening frame or head 9. The stiffening frame or head 9 is fastened to a handle 10 and the frame consists of two longitudinally disposed frame members or bars 11 and 12, bent back upon themselves to form the spring fingers 7 and 8, the spring fingers 7 and 8 being turned at their terminals to provide the blunt portions 13 and 14:
constituting heads which may be received in the pockets 3 and 4.
When the swab is to be applied, the spring fingers 7 and 8 are contracted. against the frame bars 11 and 12 and since the bars 11 and 12 slightly converge from the handle,
it will be apparent that the stiffening frame or head may be easily inserted into the baglike structure. As soon as the fingers 7 and 8 are entirely within the swab they will expand or spring apart so that the enlarged portions 13 and 14 engage in the pockets 3 and 4, thereby securely fastening the swab to the head or stiffening frame. In order to remove the swab, the operator grips it as shown in Fig. 1 so that the fingers can be contracted against the bars 11 and 12, whereupon the stiffening frame or head may be expeditiously removed.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A mop frame comprising a handle, spaced bars extending from the handle, and rearwardly extending, outwardly diverging spring fingers carried by said bars.
2. A mop frame comprising a handle, spaced, bars attached to the handle and converging toward their free ends, and rearwardly, outwardly diverging spring fingers carried by said bars.
3. A mop frame comprising a handle, bars constituting a shank and attached to the handle, the bars spaced and extending from the handle and outwardly converging, and rearwardly extending, outwardly diverging spring fingers carried by said bars.
4. A mop frame comprising a handle, bars constituting a shank and attached to the handle, the bars spaced and extending from the handle and outwardly converging, and rearwardly extending, outwardly diverging spring fingers carried by said bars, the fingers having free ends turned to form pocket engaging portions.
In testimony whereof I afiix my. si ature.
HERBERT M. STU GIS.
