SIGN-MAKING DEVICE.
Application fi-1e'd' 0ctober '1 8, 1924. Serial No. 744,484
The object oil my present invention is the provision of 'a simple and inexpensive means for rendering easy the painting of letters in a sign, mantis in such manner that the letters are accurately positioned relative to each other.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.-
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a view showing one embodiment of my invention as positioned for the placing of the letter Y in a sign.
Figure 2 shows a modification positioned for the placing of the letter N of peculiar type in a sign.
Figure 3 is a view showing a group of letters carried by adevice constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 4 is a View of a modified letter carried by a device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Reference will first be had to Figure 1 wherein the first three letters of the word STAY are shown on a line 1, and a device of my invention is shown as provided with a projection 2 forming the letter Y. The device may be formed of metal or any other material appropriate to its purpose and in addition to the projection 2 it comprises a body 3 having a straight edge 4: extending from opposite sides of said projec tion at itslower end as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. The said body 3 is provided on its face with a longitudinal rib 5 to facilitate handling of the device, and itis also provided on its face with scales 6 the divisions of which extend to the straight edge 4 and define fractions of inches as illustrated.
In use the device as described the straight edge of the body 3 is placed on a line 7 drawn immediately below the letters S, T and A so that the letter Y can be drawn in upright position, after which the device is positioned so that by use of one of the scales 6 the position of the. latter Y after the letter A can be accurately determined. Therefore, when the projection 2 is correctly positioned the said projection is used as a guide for drawing the outline of the letter Y, after which thespace between the outlines is filled with paint applied in the ordinary well known manner or in any other manner compatible with the purpose of my invention. After theiinaking of the letter Y as stated,- my novel. device is used to measure the starting point to the right-of the letter Y :of any letter that is to follow the letter Y, a pencil mark or the like being made adjacent to the straight edge 4 for locating the following letter.
In the device 1 shown in Figure 2 the projection 2 0n the body 3 is in the form of the letter N and is provided with slots 8. The body 3 is similar to the-body 3 excepting that it lacks thelongitudinal rib 5 of the body 3. The embodiment shown in Figure 2 may be used in the same manner as the embodiment shown in Figure 1, and
the embodiment shown in Figure 2 may be also used in a different manner, namely two lines may be drawn on the projection 2 to define the width of the letter, and the letter may be marked through the slots 8, and the painting may be placed over the marks 8*, or if preferred the spaces defined by the marks made through the slots 8 may be left as vacant spaces within the painting that .defines the letter N so as to impart to the letter when completed an ornamental ap pearance.
In Figure invention which comprises a body 3 which carries projections 2 with slots 8. Then deemed expedient the body 3 may be pro- Vided with graduated scales similar to the scales 6 and may also be provided with a longitudinal rib similar to the rib 5. The projections 2" illustrated constitute the letters of the word EACH, but it will be understood that devices similar to the device 3" and bearing other words in common use such as SPECIAL, BOX or other words may beemployed in the discretion of the manufacturer. I
In Figure 4, I show a device including a body 3 and a projection 2 shaped to form a letter, a part only of which extends beyond the straight edge 4. The projection 2 is provided with slots 8, and in addition to the slots 8 some slots 8 may be formed in the body 3 ,as illustrated. I would also have it understood that when deemed expedient the embodiment shown in Figure l may have on the faceof its body 3 a scale such as 6 in Figures 1 and 2.
By the use of my novel device it will be manifest that the letters of a sign maybe outlined on the surface to carry the sign with all of the letters accurately positioned,
3,1 show an embodiment of my after which the letters may be painted either solid or in outline, or with the outline in one color and the space or spaces Within the outlines in another color in the discretion of he craftsman.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device for facilitating the painting of signs comprising a body having a straight ed e and also having at its straight edge side a projection shaped to form a letter of the alphabet; said body also having on its face and extending from its straight edge scale lines defining fractions of an inch, the scale lines being positioned at opposite sides of the projection forming the letter-n 2. A device for facilitating the painting of signs comprising a body having a straight edge and also having at its straight edge side a projection shaped to form a letter of the alphabet; the said projection forming the letter being provided With slots In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
