Description
UNITED STATES HIRAM S. BARTLETT, OF MIDLAND7 MICHIGAN.
PATENT QEErcEo IMPROVEMENT IN LOG-SLEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 63,0112, dated May 1l, 1875; application iiled March 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM S. BARTLETT, of Midland, in the county of Midland and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Logging-Sled, Smc., of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side View of a logging-sled to which my improvement has been applied, part being broken away to show the construction.l
Fig. 2 is afr detail top View of the saine, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: a', Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of logging and other sleds, so as to make them stronger and more durable, and enable them to yield to accommodate themselves to uneven ground.
The invention consists in the saddle constructed and combined with the runner, the beam, and the bolt, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a runner of the sled, about the construction of which there is nothing new. B is asaddle or knee, which is grooved upon its lower side to receive and fit upon the upper edge ofA the runner A, and' is secured in place upon said runner by screws or bolts.
part of the saddle B is formed a recess, b',
curved upon the arc of a circle having a common center with the arc of the concave of the Y top of said saddle. The recess b is designed to receivethe head of the bolt D, which bolt passes up through a short slot in the saddle B, and through a hole in the beam C, and has a nut screwed upon its upper end.
This construction allows the runner to adjust itself to uneven ground, while the beam is held in place by a reach passing from the forward beam to the hind one. The saddle B also strengthens the runner A, and renders it less liable to split or break.
I am aware of the existence of a sled in which a rocking cap-plate is combined with a runner-knee having an arc-shaped surface.
Having thus described myinvention, 1 claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent- The saddle B, combined with the runners A, the beam O, and the bolt D, substantially as shown and described.
HIRAM S. BARTLETT.
