EAR PROTECTOR.

Application filed November used as a protector to prevent injury to the cars of a person, by burning, while a head of hair is being marceled.

Further objects of the invention'are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set t'orth. an ear protecting device, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong durable, compact, thoroughly eiiicient in its use, incliiiding inherent means tor maintainiug it in protective position with respect to the ears ot a person, conveniently installed. .in position, and inexpensive to manuitacturo.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel con strni't-ion, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically descril'iechand illustrated in the acconuninying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can he resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

an ear protecting device in accordance with this invention comprises a pair of oppositely disposed protectors referred to generally by the reference characters 1, 2 and a pair ot Slldflldy connected resilient ar is retered to generally by the reference characters f. 4- and each of said arms has one of its ends fixedly-secured to a protector. The resilient arms provide inherent means tor retaining the protectors in position with re spect to the ears of a person.

As both protectors are of like construction, but one will be described, as the do iption of one will apply to the other.

which protector comprises an oval shaped cap member consisting of an oval shaped plate 5 formed integral with an inwardly extending continuous flaring flange 6, of the same contour as the contour of the plate 5.

The flange 6 is cut away at its point of joinder with the plate 5, to form a passage or slot 7 disposed approximately at the trans verse median of the plate 5. The slot 7 'tlormed in the member 1 is provided for the passage ot the arm 3 which extends partly across the inner face of the plate 5, bears against said inner face and is fixedly secured therewith by a holdfast device 8. The forward ends of the arms 3 and 4 extend through the slots 7 and the rear end of eachfoii said arms is in the form of a band. The band'on the arm 3 is indicated at it) and the band on the arm 4: at ii. The bands are oppositely disposed with respect to each other and provide means for slidably connecting the arms 3 and 4 together. arms 3 and 4 provide a resilient holder "for maintaining the protectors in position with respect to the ears of a person, and owing' to the manner of slidably connecting the arms 3 and l together, the holder is lengthwise adjustable. 1

The plate 5, of each protector, is formed with a series or row of spacedopenings 12 providing air passages or for admitting sound so that the wearer of the device can hear. Each opening of the series or row of openings is positioned between the center of a plate 5 and the flange 6. The secured end of the arm 3 or l is positioned between a painot' openings of the series or row of openings.

When the device is mounted in position, the elements 1 and 2 are arranged to enclose the ears of the person, and the holder extends around the back of the head, see Fi ure 1. The flange 6 can be of any suit- 21bit} width'so that the protector will be of the desired depth. Each protector can be of any suitable width and length desired.

Owing to the adjusta'bility of the resilient holder it can be adjusted to any headsize,

from a small child to an adult. The resilient arms 3, 4. are secured against the inner face of the plate 5, so as not to interfere with the shears during the cutting or bobbing operation of the hair. The normal tendency of the adjustable holder is to force the protectors l and 2 against the head of the person whereby said protectors l and are main tained in position. The holder depends at a downward incli ration with respect to the protectors 1 and 2 and in a manner as shown in Figure 1.

Each of the protectors are constructed of rigid material, preferably aluminum owing to its lightness, but it is to be understood that each protector can be formed of any suitable material.

it is thought that the many advantages of an ear protecting device, in accordance with this invention, can he readily understood. and although the preferred embod ment of the invention is as illustrated and described yet it is to he understood that changes in the details of construction can he had which will fall wihin the scope of the invention as claimed.

What we claim is:

't. An ear protecting device comprising a pair of oppositely disposed protectors, each consisting of a plate formed of rigid material and provided with an inwardly extendingedge flange co-extensive with the plate and of the 'ing contour, said plate formed with a row of spaced openin and with each on *"ng of the row positioicd between the center of the plate and the flange, and a holder for said protector, said holder having each end thereof attached to a protector.

An ear protecting device comprising a pair of oppo'eitely disposed oval shaped protectors. each consisting of a plate having an integral inwardly extending edge flange coextensive therewith and of flaring contour, each of said plates formed with a row of spaced openings and with one side of its flange slotted, and a lengthwise adjustable resilient holder common to said protectors and having the ends thereof extending asse ses through said slots and secured to the inner faces of the plate.

3. An ear protecting device comprising a pair of oppositely disposed oval shaped protectors, each consisting of a plate having an integral inwardly extending edge flange 00- xtensive therewith and of flaring contour, each of said plates formed with a row of spaced openings and with one side of its flange slotted, a lengthwise adjustable resilient holder common to said protectors and having the ends thereof extending through said slots and secured to the inner faces of the plate, the secured ends of said holders positioned between the pairs of openings of said rows.

An ear protecting device comprising a pair of oppositely disposed oval shaped protectors, each consisting of a plate having an integral inwardly extending edge flange coextensive therewith and of daring contour, each of said plates formed with a row of spaced openings and with one side of its flange slotted, a lengthwise adjustable resilient holder common to said protectors and having the ends thereof extending through said slots and secured to the inner faces of the plate, said holder formed of a pair of slidably connected sections and the secured ends thereof positioned between pairs of openings of said rows.

An ear protecting device comprising a pair of protectors oppositely disposed with respect to each other and each consisting of a plate formed of rigid material and an inwardly extending edge flange integral and co-extensive with the plate, each of said plates forn'led with row of spaced openings, a pair of resilient arms slidably connected together, each of said arms extending through one side of a flange and partly across the inner face of a plate and between a pair of openings of a row, and means for tixedly securing the arms to the plate.
