* UNlTED sTATE S PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. snnum, or PHILADELPHIA, rnnnsynvama, assrenon. 'ro BROWN a BAILEY comranr, or -I IIILADELI IIIA, PENNSYLVANIA, a 'conronarxon or PENNSYLVANIA.
FASTENI NG MEANS FOR PAPER FOLDERS AND CONTAINERS.
Application filed July 12, 1921. Serial No. 484,065.
strip provided with my improved fastening means adapting the same to be used as a wrapper or bandfor holding, sa'y,'sheets of material arranged in layers; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the construction shown in Fig.1 with the end members turned in and in process of engaging the locking parts; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a paper'or 2' efibre board sheet having a form adapting it for use as a folder or container and provided with my improved lockin means and Fig. 4 is a perspective view 0 the erected construction illustrated in Fig. 3 when in process of engaging the locking parts.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the construction comprises the, integrally connected body or bottom and intermediate section 1, the parallel sections 2lconnected therewith in hinged relation upon the score lines 3 and the end sections 4 and 5 connected with the respective sections 2 in hinged relation upon the score lines 6.
' The section 4 is provided with the transverse slot 7 having the-inturned or hooklike ends 7 forming the end tongues 8.
The section 5 is provided with the dovetail tongue and the reentrant loops or opencircular holes 10 intersecting the an ular section 5 and the ends of the tongue 9. A score line 11 forms with the edges at one corner of the tongue, a triangular car 12 edges-5 and 9. between the body 0 the hold the parts together.
12, the corresponding tongue S engaging the v hook.
While the preferred construction involves the use of the sin le ear or hook 12, it is practicable, if it should be desired for any reason, to form an ear or hook of the other corner of the tongue 9, to cooperate with the second tongue 8 in holding the parts to ther in assembled relation.
11 the formshown in the constructions of Figs. 3 and 4, a paper or fibre board sheet is provided with the body, bottom or median section 14 limited by the scores 15 and 16 along which are hinged theend or side sections 17 and 18. Flaps 19 are connected in hinged relation to the sections 17 on the score lines 20 parallel to the lines 15.
A top or end section 21 is connected in hinged relation to a section 18 along the score line 22 parallel to the adjacent line 16, the part 21 having a slot 23 preferably terminating in the hooked or inturned ends 23 providing the tongues 24.
section 21, is hin ed to a member 18 on the score line 22 parfilel to the adjacent line 16 andis provided with a dove-tail. tongue 26 having the open loops or eyes 27 intersected by the edges and 26'. A score line 28 forms a triangular car 29 of one corner of the tongue 26. This ear is turned in to facilitate the entry of the tongue into the slot An end section 25, supplementary to the 23 for eflecting the locking engagement, the
opposite corner '30 being first entered in the slot followed continuously by the full entry of the tongue and the engagement of the ear which sprin outward automaticallyto provide a hooked engagement. A tongue 24 engages under the=ear or hook 29 to hold the lock more securely in the assembled relation. While it is generally not desirable to do this, the-corner 30 may be bent back similar to the corner 29 and act in cooperation with the corresponding tongue 24 to It will be understood that while the unbroken corners 13 and 30 facilitate the entry of the respective dovetrations of applications of the lock or fastening means which are applicable to and intended for use with containers generally.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A folder, container, or the like comprising an integral body bent to form the ottom, sides and top of a package and having overlapping end members one of which is provided with a slot and the other of which is provided with a dove-tail tongue passing through said slot and housed beneath said slotted member, said tongue and the member of which it forms a part having edges intersected by reentrant open loops extending inwardly from the intersection of projections of said edges, said tongue having a hinged corner adapted to be bent to facilitate the entry of said tongue in said slot and to effect locking engagement between the overlapping parts and form a continuous package cover.
2. A folder, container or the like having overlapping members, one of which is provided with a slot having am inturned end forming a tongue and the other of which is provided with a dove-tail tongue with ends terminating in open eyes and a hinged corner adapted to be bent inwardly for facilitating the entry ofi said tongue second named in said slot and for engagement with said tongue first named.
3. A folder, container or the like having overlapping members, one of which is provided with a slot and the other of which is provided with a dove-tail tongue having the WILLIAM R. SHRUM.
