LOCOMOTIVE BOILER.
Application filed January 14, 1922.
The object of this invention is to construct a locomotive so that the safety valves will not project materially beyond the jacket line of the boiler. This is accomplished by inverting the dome and locating it within the boiler.

Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional View through a portion of a locomotive boiler and. illustrating the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating a detail of construction; and
Figs. 4 to 6, both inclusive, are views illus trating modifications of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the shell of the boiler having an opening 2. 3 is an inverted dome having side walls 4, a bottom 5 and a flange 6. This flange is secured by rivets 7 to the boiler shell, as shown in Fig. 1. In the bottom of the dome is an opening 8 closed by a base plate 9, which is detachably mounted within the dome and secured thereto by bolts 10. Suitable packing is located between the base plate and the bottom of the dome, as illustrated in Fig. 8. The packing, in the present instance, consists of a ring 14: and a flat washer 15. Attached to the base plate 9 are three safety valves 16 spaced apart, as shown. These safety valves are so designed that the upper portion of each valve preferably extends below the upper edge of the shell 11. This shell is located within the dome and extends through the usual jacket 12, which surrounds the boiler.
While three safety valves are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, it will be understood that the number of safety valves may be varied depending upon the size of the locomotive. A single valve is illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7.
The safety valves communicate with the interior of the boiler through openings in the base plate 9. Suspended below the bottom is a deflecting plate 17 spaced from the dome by spacing rivets 18. This deflecting plate is turned up at the edges, as at 19, so that the steam, escaping through the safety valves, can pass close to the upper shell of Serial No. 529,281.
the boiler and between the deflecting plate and the bottom of the dome. In the deflecting plate 17 is a drainage hole 20.
In Fig. 4, the dome 3 is provided with a solid base and the safety valves 16 are secured directly to the base, dispensing with the separate base plate illustrated in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 5, the flange 6 of the inverted dome 3 extends over and is secured to a ring 21 attached to the shell of the boiler and a deflector 17 forms an integral part of the inverted dome.
Fig. 6 is a modification in which the safety valve is located in a horizontal position, being secured to the side walls l This construction dispenses with the deflecting plate.
By the above construction, it will be seen that the body of the safety valve can be located below the upper surface of the boiler and is preferably within the outside line of the jacket. The inverted dome can be de pressed to a greater extent than shown in order to locate a vertical safety valve entirely within the line of the boiler, if found desirable.
By this arrangement, the size of the boiler may be increased and yet kept within the prescribed limits.
I claim:
1. The combination in a horizontal locomotive boiler having an opening in its upper curved surface; and an inverted dome with the boiler directly under the opening, said dome having a flange secured to the inner wall of the boiler, the bottom of the dome being of a depth to allow the major portion of a safety valve to be located within the dome.
2. The combination of horizontal locomotive boiler having an opening in the upper curved surface; an inverted flanged dome within the boiler and directly under the opening, the flange of said dome being secured to the boiler; an appliance located within the dome and secured to the bottom thereof; and a flanged deflecting plate spaced from the bottom of the dome and secured to said dome.
3. The combination of a locomotive boiler having an opening in the upper portion; an
inverted dome secured to the interior of the boiler and directly under the opening, the bottom 6f the inverted dome being open; (a detachable base plate mounted on the 5 bottom of the dome; safety valves secured to the base plate; and a deflecting plate under the dome and spaced therefrom, said deflecting plate being flanged at the edges so as to direct steam from the upper portion of the boiler to the valves.
