Our invention relates to record holders provided with detachable, controlled record illuminating mean in which the holder is provided with a reflector to direct light to the record, and has means to conveniently carry a record making instrument. Still more particularly our invention relates to a holder in which the illuminating means is 'providedwith an adjustable shield by which the degree of illumination upon the record maybe controlled as desired. Our invention further relates to means by which our record-holder may be detachably mounted in operable position upon any suitable support and be adjusted thereon to any position required for conveniently making records; it being especially adapted for use ture, of few parts, upon which records may be securely and conveniently held and from which records may be readily withdrawn,

Another object is, to provide a support for. our record-holder on vertical. inclined or horizontal supporting elements. suchthat it may, when desired, be displaced from its normal record receiving position and may be securely and conveniently thus held by means that form a part of therecord-hohler support, and may be so adjusted, that the support will be firmly and securely automatically locked in either record-receiving. or in displaced position at the will of the operator.

Our invention consists of the particular combination, arrangement and organization of parts shown in the accompanying drawings, described in the specificatiom'and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, our device consists of a body portion or plate-like member 10, which at its opposite longitudinal edges, is provided with substantially U-shaped angularly-formed bent-up portions 11 and 12, so arranged that portions 13 and 14 thereof are inwardly bent towards each other from said edges, substantially parallel to the plate-like portion 10, to removably hold and retain in operative position, a plurality of sheets, strips, cards or other devices, upon which memoranda may be made. Integral with the plate-like member 10 at one end thereof, we provide ail-upwardly bent or curved end portion 15, to serve as a means within which a lamp socket 16 may be detachably mounted in spring fingers 17, so that said socket 16 may be partially encircled by the bent-up portion 15 and beheld therewithin to carry a lamp or other light producing means 18, by which the record-receiving strips, cards, sheets, or other elements may be illuminated. Connected to the socket 16 is an electrical conductor 19 by means of which the light producing means 18 is energized. This electrical conductor 19 may be connected to any suitable source of electric energy, such as a lamp socket, or in an automobile, to the lighting system of a car, or to any other suitable supply of current. The socket 16 is provided with a switch 20, by means of which the lamp 18 may be lighted or dimmed, as
desired. The end portion 15 is on its inner surface, covered with a reflecting material such as enamel, silver or any other suitable substance, so that it will reflect the light from the lamp 18 upon the sheets or cards upon which-the memoranda is to be recorded. The end section 15 is so curved from the body portion 10, that it shields the eye of the operator from any glare of light, but at the same time, directs the light from the lamp 18 to the record receiving blank. The section 15 is'provided with a slot 21', near one end thereof. inorder to receive the switch 20 in operative position and permit its necessary movement to effect the lighting or dimming of the lamp 18. The spring fingers 17 are atfixed to the bent-up portion 15 of the body portion 10, by means of rivets or other suitable fastening elements 22, so that the lamp and socket may be held in the desired operatixe position by the spring fingers 17 or may be readily removed therefrom when desired for repair, adjustment or other reasons. Although the bent-up end portion 15 partially encircles the socket 16 and the light producing means 18, it however, is so formed that it provides an opening substantially its entire length transversely across the body portion 10, from which light may be reflected to the recordreceiving means, in order to illuminate these means for a ready making of a. record thereon independent of other lighting means.
Afiixed to the end section 15, we provide spring clips 23 and 24, so arranged that they will conveniently hold a pencil, or other means by which records may be made upon the record-receiving blanks, and which.
will permit the ready withdrawal of the pencil or other instrument when needed for use, but will otherwise securely hold the same when not in use.
In-order that the blanks, or other devices upon which the record may. be made, shall be securely held within the record-holder, we provide a gripping clamp element or spring finger 25, which at one end is attached to the body portion 10 of the record holder, above the upper' margin of the. record-receiving blanks and which. at its free end, may be lifted to'receive and grip new blanks or record-rece1nng means as they are to be introduced into the record-.v I
holder. 'hen the record-receiving blanks are introduced into the record-holder, the blanks will thus be securely held and when each record-receiving blank is withdrawn,
will securely contact with and grip the next succeeding record-receiving blank and hold it and the other record-receiving.blank in the desired position, so that records may be 'this character, but may be provided to receive any record required for the particular use to which our record-holder is to be applied. a
In Fig. t-we have illustrated a recordholder having a modified form of end member 15, in which there-is provided, beside the slot 21.for the switch 20, a slot 26, slmilar to and substantially parallel to slot 21, in which a key or switch-2T may operate. The key or switch 27 is affixed to a collar or shutter 28, which is mounted upon a cap 29, arranged to be placed upon and over the end of the socket 16 carrying the lamp or source of light 18, so that an end portion 30 provided with crimping 31, may be readily fitted over the lamp carrying end of the socket 16 and-operably hold the-cap thereon,
but in detachable relation thereto. The cap 29 isopen at the end provided with the crimpings 31 and is closed at the opposite end 32, and is further provided, around its lateral periphery, with a slot or opening 33, through which light from the lamp or source of illumination, 18'may bed-irected upon the record-receiving blanks in our record-holder. The collar or shutter 28, is mounted on and arouhdthe cap 29, sothat it may be rotated thereupon and is provided with a slotted opening in one portion thereof, and is closed in theremainifig' portion so that light may' not transmit therethrough. This arrangement is provided in order that the portion 81 and 33 may, when registering with each other, allow the light from the source 18 to pass through the slots in the tap and shutter and fall upon the record-receiving lit) - to control the outflow the light, the shutter 28 may be so positioned that the opening may, in whole or in part, register with an opening 37,'provided in the'body portion 29 of the cap near the edge 38. By this mean's'and arran' ement there is provi. ed an apparatus that the movement of the .shutter,-will effect a control of the light passing through the openings 35 and 37 which may be readily regulated to' any desired degree of exactness.
The type of device shown in Fig. 4 ditfers from'the type of device-shown in Fig.'1,.in that the type in Fig. 4 is provided with the regulating cap element 29 and the slot 26 within which the control of this cap element may operate,,and in that this type of device provides means for regulating the amount of the light thrown upon the memoranda re ceiving blank independently of the operation of the switch 20, illustrated in Figs. land 2.
Although we have shown the form-of openings. in the'capmember 29, to be substantially that of a parallelogram or straight-sided figure, in'addition to the air-- cular openings 35 and "37, it is to be understood that this form of opening is entirely arbitrary and that-wemay, if desired, adopt any other shape for such openings, it being understood that our invention comprises the provision of a rotatable collar or shutter which may adjust the size of the light emitting openingto any degree of fineness or shade required. 3
It will be obvious that by the provision of this cap 29, we have devised a means by. which the light producing element may be so encased, or shielded, that the degree of light directed upon the recon -receiving blanks may be regulated to any desired degree of exactness at the will of the operator by manipulation of the arm 27,'which actu-- ates and turns the sleeve or shutter 28 on the cap 29 controlling the. openings 34,
and'35.
As illustrated in Fig. 7, we mount upon the steering column or post 40,- our illuminated record-holderby means of a support, which comprises a split base or clamp member 41, held together around the steering.
post or column 40, by means of a bolt 42, provided with a threaded portion at one opposite end, carrying awing nut 43 adapted to be adjusted on the thread so that the collar portion 41 may be. secrn'ely clamped around and to the steering column 40 in any desired fixed position. The supporting bracket further comprises an arm 44. extending laterally from the collar 41 with an upwardly bent portion from the arm 44 and a portion 46 outwardly bent from the ,portion 45 substantially arallel to the portion 44, the portion 46 aving at its outer end, a substantially U-shaped formation or jaw 47. adapted to clampone side of our record-holding device. We provide further an independent section of thesupporting frame or'bracket, which comprises an upwardly e xtendin portion or arm'48, having bent therefrom aterally a portion of arm 49, substantially on a plane with the portion of arm 46 and provided with a U-shaped bentup jaw like'end 50, substantially identical'with but oppositely'formed to that of the jaw 47 on the arm 46. Extending throught'the arm 45 and the arm 48, we provide a bolt 51, having a wing nut 52 threaded on one end thereof, so that the said nut may adjust the bolt 51 in such a manner as, to clamp our record-holder in adjustable fixed operative position, between the jaws 47 and 50 of the supporting bracket. By this supporting means, we are enabled to carry our record-holder in any desired position of adjustment upon a steering post or other vertical substantially cylindrical supporting member, so that the height and position of the record-holder will be eonvenient for use of the'operator. Y
I We have shown in Fig.8, a bracket or support for-our record-holder, substantially similar to'lthat illustrated in Fig. f 7, but it is provided with gripping jaws-11 51 and 52, which. are arranged to engage and hold the supporting arm- 53 in' operative position upon an upright, '54, of a typewriter frame 55, part of. which is illustrated in Fig. 8.
The sup orting bracket is provided with a bolt 56, aving a wing nut 57 on one end, so arranged that it .will clamp the jaws 51 and 52' in anydesired position of adjustment upon the standard 'or post 54 of the typewriter, and sothat the supporting bracket maybe detached therefrom. The supporting bracket is formed with a quarter turn, at
58, so that the arm59 may be in proper position to co-operate with the arm 60, to engage and hold our record-holder in desired operative position. The clamp member 52, being made separately from the clamp member 51, of the arm 53, by the loosening of, a wing nut 52, permits the change of position of the clamp and supporting arm in reference to the typewriter post 54, or its remoral therefrom.
Our device when used in connection with an automobile, may not only be mounted upon the steering post, as illustrated in Fig. 7, but may be mounted in any convenient position within the car, such as on the 'door thereof, or as illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12, may be attached to-the dashboard 62'. When so attached to the dashboard, the brackets or gripping jaws 63 and 64, may be affixed thereto by any suitable fastening means,
such as screws or other holding elements 65, gripping oppositely extending ends of substantially L-shaped end portions 66 and 67 of the jaws 63 and 64. The jaws-63 and 64 are provided with diametrically-arrangecl semi-cylindrical enlargements ,or hollowed out portions positioned at right angles to each other and are so arranged that they will securely grip and hold in these enlargeme ts. similar enlargements TO, longitudinally arranged upon the pivoted end'of the supporting arm Tl. By this device the supporting arm 71 may be swung downwardly into displaced position.as.illustrated in dotted lines in 'Fig. 11 and so firmly held. or may be swung upwardly from said displaced position to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 11. and besecurely held for pur poses of record making.- when the jaws 63 and 64 and the arm T1 are operably-assenn bled by means of the bolt 72 passing between said jaws and arm and when the bolt-I2 is properly adjusted by means of the thumbnut 78 threaded thereon to effect anv degree of gripping contact with the arm T1it beingunderstood that this degree of pressure is adjustable by the operation of the thumbnut T3 upon the nut T2. v j
The arm T1 is provided at its outer end, with a laterally extending arm portion. '75, similar to the laterally ext-ending arm portions 46 and 60 in Figs. 7 and 9. and at its outer end. the extending portion 75 is provided with a bent-up, substantially U-shaped portion 76. that is similar to the bent-up U- shaped portion 4? and shown in Fig. 7, which portion 76 is adapted to grip one side of the record-holder. Co-operating with the arm 71. and the laterally extending "portion 75, is a separate member 77. having at its outer end. a bent-up portion 78 of substantially U-shape. which portion 78 is adapted to grip the opposite side of our record-holder. andhold it in operative position upon the supporting arm 71. A bolt '79 is provided. to hold the laterally extending portion 77 in'co-optrative position with the arm 71 and the laterally extending portion 7 5 and is on one end provided with a thumbnut 80 or other suitable fastening means, by
which the laterally extending portion 7 7 maybe held and adjusted in operable relation to the arm 71 and,the laterally: extending portion thereof '7 5,. in order to grip and retain in adjustable position our recordholder'.
Our device may be made of sheet metal or any other suitable materiaL. and may be formed in the manner illustrated and it is .to be understood that the primary purpose may be readily made, and the blanks be l e- I moved after receiving the record, without disarranging the remaining. blanks, It is also to be understood that a feature of our invention is the provision of means, by which the blank upon which a record has been made may be conveniently withdrawn without disturbing those upon which no record'has been made. It will also be understood that a still further additional feature of our invention is, the provision of means by whiclrthe illuminating element in our device is so encased that: the light may be controlled to the desired intensity and may fall upon the record-blank to permitthe record to be properlymade thereon: and so that, a means by which. independently of other sources of illumination, the blanks may be illuminated so as to permit the record to bemade. and to permit the reniovalof the record-blank holder and their removal and the adjustment ofthe device supporting the record-blank holder, operative to any desired position. a j v It is further to be understood, that although we have described our invention as suitable to receive records .in single order, that a multiple record may be madeby the usual means in which this-is accomplished.
Although we have shown, and described our invention in detail, yet we do not wish tobe limited thereby, except as the state of the art and the appended.. claims-may re quire, for it is obvious that, various modificationsand changes maybe made in the construction. combination. organization and operation of the parts thereof. without de parting from the spirit and scope of our invention. i

In a device of this character, the combination of means to removably supportrecord-receiving blanks, means detachable from said supporting means to illuminate said record-receiving blanks, means to re movably carry a record-making instrument, rotatable means carried upon said illumi- 'nating means to control the amount of illumination' directed to saidrecord-receiving blanks, and means to supporte said recordreceiving blanks upon, any suitable carrier.

rotatable means carried upon and detachable from said illuminating means to control the amount of illumination directed to said record-receiving blanks, and meansto suport said record-receiving. blanks upon any suitable carrier.
6. In a device of this character, the combination of means to removably support record-receiving blanks, means detachable from said supporting means to illuminate said record-receiving blanks, means to I'e-' '.movably carry'a record-making instrument,
means, rotatable, and carried upon said illuminating means, to control the amount .of illumination of said record-receiving blanks, means to support said record-receiving means upon any suitable carrier, and means to lock said record-receiving supporting means upon said carrier in operative position.
7. In a device of this character, the combination -of means to removably support record-receiving blanks, means detachable from said supporting means to illuminate said record-receiving blanks, spring-fingers adapted" to removably hold a record-making instrument, rotatable perforated means mounted onand detachable from said illuminating means to control the amount of illumination of said record-receiving blanks, andmeans to support the aforesaid specified device upon a suitable carrier.
8. In a device of this character, the combination of substantially late-like means to removably support recor -receivingfblanks,
