UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
GILLMAN WOODWARD, OF PROVIDENCE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES A. MATTES ON, OF JOHNSTON, RHODE ISLAND.
"IMPROVEMENT IN BLIND-STOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,805, dated March 16, 1875; application filed February 8, 1875.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I GILLMAN WOODWAR'D, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and'Improved Fixture for Adjusting and Fastening Blind-slats, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings like letters indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a front View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
My invention is designed to adjust and keep in the desired position the slats ot' a windowblind, and to lock the same when they are closed. By connecting the rods of the two portions of the blind the upper slats are operated at the same time with the lower.
My invention consists of a blind-stop having a rod attached to the slats of the blind, and operated by a ratchet arrangement of a thumbpiece with its connected case, the ratchets being locked by a spring.
The fixture is made of metal or any suitable material, and fastened by screws to the bottom cross-piece of the window-blind. Within the cylinder of the case A is contained the pin or bolt B, provided with a button-like head, against which, and surrounding the bolt, is placed a spiral spring, 0. This spring, at its opposite end, rests solidly against the inside of the case A, and thus works wholly within the cylinder to keep the pin in place. The pin passes through the case, as also through the thumb-piece D, to the latter of which it is firmly riveted. The thumb-piece has a limited vertical revolution, turning with the pin to which it is fastened, and operates the rod E to raise or lower it, as desired. The thumbpiece, by means of an eye, a, cast in it, is connected with the rod E, which, being fastened to the rod of the slats above, communicates motion to them, opening or closing them, as may be desired. The inner side of the thumbpiece at its lower end, and also the outer right side of the case, are furnished with a series of serrations, b 0, cast upon them in a circle lying about the axis of revolution, and corresponding with and fitting into each other. As the thumb-piece is elevated or depressed the ratchetteeth'of the thumb-piece override those on the case, being drawn together again by the inclosed spring 0. By this contrivance the slats are held in the position in which they are placed.
When the slats are closed and the thumb piece I) crowded back the rod E serves to lock them in position, as it bears against the thumbpiece on a line behind the center of its revolution.
1 claim as a novel and useful invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The locking device consisting of the pivoted thumb-piece D, in combination with the connecting-rod E, made and operating substantially as described.
2. The blind-slat fastener and adjuster, substantially as herein described, consisting ofthe case A, pin B, spiral spring G, thumb-piece D, rod E, and ratchets b 0, operating as and for the purpose specified.
GILLMAN VVOODWARD.
