Application led September 13, 1924. Serial No. 737,513.
This invention relates to a cigarette and its object is to provide such an article which is so constructed that the same reduces tire hazard to a minimum` eliminates the maximuni amount ot' nicotine and avoids many of the obnoxious after eil'ccts which i'ollou' the smoking ot' cigarettes as heretofore commonly manufactured.
In the accompanying dra\:ings:
Figure 1,l is a cigarette partly in side elevation and partly in section embodying our invention.
Figure 2, is a cross section on the correspondingly numbered line on Figure 1.
Figure 3, is an edge view of the end -disk arranged on the rear end of the tubular container of the cigarette.
Figures 4 and 5. are cross sections on the rorresi'iondingly numbered lines on Figure 1.
Figure 6, is an edge view of the perforated intermediate disk of the cigarette.
Figure 7, is a cross-section on line 7-7, Figure 1.
Similar characters ot reference indica-te like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The numeral 10 represents the tubular con tainer jacket or shell ot' the cigarette which may be constructed of any suitable combustible material, such as paper in the usual manner.
lVitliin the front part of this container is arranged a filling 11 ot smoking material such as tobacco in any suitable form which `is adapted to be lighted at its front end and consumed by drawing air rearwardly through same in the ordinary7 Way. This filling terminates short of the rear end of the container so as to form a chamber in the rear part of the same which is adapted to receive the elements constituting our invention.
At its rear end the filling of smoking material is engaged by an intermediate disk or partition 12 which is preferably constructed of non-combustible material, such as asbestos and which is of circular form so as to tit the bore of the tubular container and is also provided with a plurality of perforations 13 to permit the passage of smoke therethrough. In rear of this intermediate disk a filter roll 14 is arranged Within the container, which roll is made from a sheet ot absorbent material such as paper, gauze cloth or the like, this roll being Wound to a diameter equal to the bore of the container and arranged therein with its axis parallel thereto and the trout end ot' the vroll engaging the rear side of said intermediate disk. In addition to serving as a. filler this roll may be medicated or flavored with any desiredmaterial to Suit the taste or demand ot' the smoker or consumer.
Arranged within the rear extremity or tip of the container is a rear disk or stopper 15 having a central hole 18 and which is preferably constructed of paper saturated with paratline. this disk engaging its inner or front side with the rear end of said roll and the outer or rear side ot this disk being Hush, or substantially so with the rear end of the tubular container. This disk forms a stiff core which permits the teeth to obtain a goed hold on the cigarette.
After the several parts have been assembled in the manner above described the saine are sealed together so that the same Will not become dismembercd by dipping the rear end or tip of the cigarette in melted parat'- tine and thereby form a coat 16 on the outer side ot the rear disk and cement the saine in the container and also a coating 17 on the rear peripheral surface of the container so that the lips ot the smoker Will not stick to the cigarette while holding the latter in Athe mouth and also coating the hole or bore 18 of the disk 15, so as to strengthen the saine. The peripheral coating preferably extends forwardly an extent equal to the length of the filtering roll, thereby rendering this part of the container transparent and enabling' the smoker to observe the amount of discoloration which occurs in the filter due to the absorption of nicotine therein when smoking the cigarette.
This invention may be embodied in cigarettes when the same are originally manufactured or the invention may be added to the cigarettes after they are fully made up by removing a suiiicient quantity of t0- bacco from the rear end of the container to form a chamber in which to put the several elements of our construction.
A cigarette thus constructed will be autoniatically extinguished when the tobacco has burned u to the asbestos intermediate disk and also )y reason of the peripheral coating of para'line which will not be vaporized and rendered combustible by the low heat of the burning tobacco, thereby reducing to a minimum the possibility of causing tire by careless disposal of the cigarette before the same gers is prevented.
Furthermore this roll may be treated or flavored by any desired medicament or essence and thus serving to relieve some articular ailment as well as rendering smo ing enjoyable and harmless and avoiding any of the obnoxious taste Vincident to smoking tobacco in the usual manner.
lVe claim as our invention:
A cigarette comprising a tubular container, a filling of smoking material arranged in the front part of said container, a perforated disk of non-combustible material arranged in the container at the rear end of said filling, a roll of filtering material arranged in the container in rear of said non-combustible disk, and forming a plurality 'of minute longitudinal passages in the roll, a parafline saturated and perforated disk arranged in the container at the rear end o'tl said roll, and a coating of paraline on the rear side and the bore of said paratline saturated and perforated disk and around the rear part of the periphery 'of said container thereby cementing together the several members of the cigarette.
