h For the purpose of clamping the inner ends of the legs and forming a hub for the tube, standard and legs, I provide four ,pressed metal hub segments, ;eaeh"having a portion or portions of its sides adapted to bear against the adjacent sides ofadja'cent legs and each having a projection at'each -side thereof adapted to enter the recesses in the sides of such adjacent legs, together with a cooperating construction of thesegmentsand of the top-and bottom plates of the hub such as will enable the segments, not only tQlJG assembled-into ahub, but to be drawn inwardly or toward, the axis of the tube by virtue of the assembling 'op'eration, thereby causing the legs to be firmly and securely fastened to and between the hub segments.

\Vith the parts constructedand arranged as described, the legs, tube and hub will be assembled as follows:-the legs are positioned'about the tube 2 in approximately the manner indicated in Fig. 3, the hubseg ments are then inserted between the legs,
the'fianges 6 slipping along the slots 2 and the-flanges 5 bearing against the sides of the legs. The top and bottomvplatcs are then applied, with the lugs 7 in the widened portions of the slots 9. These plates, and the hub assembly generally, are then held in a suitable jig and the plates are pressed to ward each other and rotated in an appropriate direction to cause the lugs 7 to be moved radially inwardly by engagement with the wall segments 9 and 9 of the SlOtS.' lVhen the plates have been rotated a sutlicient distance and the flanges are gripping the legs firmly, the plates are secured to the legs by means of screws 10.
' If desired the special slot-construction shown and described herein may be "omitted from the bot-tom plate, the lugs 7 being projected through openings adapted to receivc and size the same and being clinched or riveted thereto. The bottom plate is shown as provided with elongated radial arms 8 having openings 8 for the screws 10.
By reason of the construction and arrangement of parts set forth herein, I enabled to provide a hub assembly forthe legs of chairs and similar articles, the component'members' of which assembly may be produced at a comparatively small expense and which, whenfass'embled, will produce a very eflicient hub-construction, serving to clamp the legs securely in place. i v
Having thus described-my invention, what I claim is: 7 V
1. A hub construction of the character described comprising a plurality of hub segments each having radially extending edge portions adapted to engage the adjacent side faces of chair legs and edge portions projecting circumferentially beyond such sition about the inner ends of such legswith' the circumferential edge portions in slots provided in the side faces of said legs and the radial edge portions engaging such faces adjacent to said slots.
' 3. A hub construction of the character describedcomprising a plurality of hub segments each having a portion of each lateral edge thereof bent radially outward. and an additional portion of each such edge pro- 'jecting at an angle to and extending beyond such radial projection and adapted to enter a slot inthe leg of a chair adjacent thereto, and means for securing the said segments in assembled position about the inner ends of such legs with the radial edge portions engaging the side faces of said legs and the other edge portions entering slots provided in the side faces of said legs adjacent to the parts engaged by such radial portions.
A hub construction of the character described comprising a plurality of hub segments each having at each lateral edge thereof an upper and a lower radially extending flange and an intermediate flange projecting circumferentially beyond such upper and lower flanges, and means for securing the said segments in assembled position about the inner ends of chair legs with'the intermediate flanges seated in slots in said legs.
5. A hub construction of the character de scribed comprising a plurality of hub segments each having at each lateral edge thereof an upper and a lower radially outwardly extending flange and an intermediate flange projecting circumferentially beyond such upper and lower flanges, and means for securing the said segments in assembled position about the inner ends of chair'legs with the intermediate flanges seated in recesses in said legs. j i

A hub construction of the character described comprising a plurality of hub segments each having at each lateral edge thereof an upper and a lower radially'extending flangeand an intermediate flange projecting circumferentially beyond such upper and lower flanges, each segment also having at the top and bottom thereof an integral lug, and top and bottom plates having apertures for the reception of said lugs and adapted to be secured to the inner ends of chair legs.

The combination, with angularly disposed chair legs, of hub segments each in terposed between the inner ends of adjacent chair legs, each segment having edge portions adapted to bear against the sides of the adjacent chairlegs, a projection at each edge adapted to enter a seat therefor in the chair leg adjacent thereto, and a lug at the top and at the bottom thereof, a plate to which the lugs at corresponding ends of the said segments are secured, a second plate,
