LOCK MECHANISM.
Original application filed May 24, 1923, Serial No. 641,161. Divided and this application filed June 19,
' 1924. Serial No. 721,061.
The invention has relation to a door looking mechanism embodying a system of bolts adapted to be thrown by hand and a lock for securing the bolts when projected into locking position, and is a division of an application for which on the 24th day of May, 1923, Ser. No. 641,161, I filed an application for patent in the United States having since become U. S. Patent No. 1,559,160, dated October27, 1925.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating the application of the invention, the full lines showing the parts in looking position and the dotted lines showing the position of the parts when the doors are unlocked;
Figure 2 is a sectional detail on the line 2-2 ofFigure 1;
Figure 3 is a front View of a portion of a door showing the lock mechanism applied thereto, and
Figure 4: is a detail sectional view on the line 4.4 of Figure 3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
Referring to the. accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a door to which the lock mechanism is applied and 2 represents a complemental part which may consist of a door, a jamb or the like to which it may be required to secure the door 1 when closed and in position to be locked. Keepers 3 and 4 are secured to the part 2, the keeper 3 being closed at opposite ends and the keepers 4 being open at one-end to admit of a latch engaging the same by a pivotal movement. Similarly constructed latches 5 are pivoted at one end to the upper and lower portions of the door 1, respectively, and their free ends are adapted to engage the keepers 1. Each of the latches 5 has a longitudinal slot 6 in which operates a pin 7 projecting from a bolt 8 which is mounted to slide in keepers 9. Two sliding bolts 8 are provided, the one for the top of the door and the other for the bottom of the door. A link 10 connects the inner end of each of the bolts 8 with an arm of a bell crank 11, the other arm of said bell crank being connected by means of a link12 with a bolt 13 slidably mounted upon the door 1 for movement in a direction at a right angle to the movement lock whereby to secure the same when projected into locking position. The part 13 constitutes the main bolt and the auxiliary or supplemental bolts 8 are connected thereto by means of the bell crank 11 and links 10 and 12, and upon operating the vmain bolt 13, the auxiliary bolts 8 are simultaneously actuated to be projected into locking position or withdrawn so as to release the door 1. The 1atches5 are simultaneously operated with .the bolts by reason of the pin and slot connection thereof with the bolts 8.
A handle 15 is attached to the main bolt 13 and admits of operating the latch mechanism from the inner side of the door. A plate 16 disposed upon the outer side of the door 1 is connected to the main bolt 13 by means of bolts 17 which pass through a slot 18 formed in the door 1. The bolts 17 also serve to connect the handle 15 to the main bolt 13. A handle 19 is attached to the plate 16. A wear plate 20 is applied to the outer side of the door 1 and has a slot to correspond with the slot 18 through which the bolts 17 pass.
A suitable lock 21 is applied to the door 1 and co-operates with the main bolt 13 to secure the same when projected into locking position, whereby to prevent unauthorized operation thereof.
When the main bolt 13 is projected into locking position, the auxiliary 'bolts 8 and the latches 5 are also projected into locking position, thereby securing the door 1 at five points and in the event of the part 2 being a swinging door, it is secured to the door 1 by the main bolt 13 and the latches 5 and since the door 1 is secured to the frame at the top and bottom, it follows that both doors 1 and 2 are made secure when in closed position. When the lock 21 is operated to release the bolt 13 the same may be moved by hand through the instrumentality of either of the handles 15 or 19, and when the main bolt and spaced therefrom and locatedon opposite sides thereof, bell crank levers on opposite sides thereof, bell crank levers each having one arm pivotally connected to an auxiliary bolt, links pivoted to the bell crank levers and to the main bolt, and the bridges of the bell crank levers being pointed in directions a'wa from the locking end of the main locking bolt.
2. A mechanism of the class described including a slidable main bolt, auxiliary bolts slidable and disposed at a right angle to the main bolt and spaced therefrom and located each having one arm pivotall connected to an auxiliary bolt, the bridges of the bell crank levers being pointed in directions away from the locking end of the main locking bolt, and links pivoted to the auxiliar v Jocking bolts and the bell crank levers constituting the connections between them, and latches operable through the movement of the auxiliar; bolts.
