SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
Application filed April 6, 1925.
My invention relates to surgical instruments and has for its object to provide a new and etiicient throat spray for spraying powdered medicants upon diseased and swollen tonsils, or other parts of the body.
A further object of my invention is to provide a new and accurate means for spraying the tonsils, after an operation, with a measured amount of any desired powder, where the amount may be varied and measured as desired by the person spraying the throat, and by which a powder may be sprayed on the sides of the throat.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specification and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings of which I have shown the best and most substantial embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a side eleva-. tion of my device. Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the tube used in my device, and Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the spoon, used in my device.
In the drawings I have shown the common type bulb A used on many spray instruments of this nature. A transparent tube 1 is provided having a longitudinal hole 2 therethrough. The said tube 1 is bent slightly as at 3, to conform to the curve of the throat, a raised portion or flange 4 is provided at one end to hold the bulb A in place thereon. At the other end the tube is conical in shape and increasedin size from the bend to the end as at 5 and a graduated scale is marked on the outside thereof. At the extreme end a threaded portion 6 is provided for securing a spoon 7 thereto. The said spoon is preferably of the same diameter as the said tube 1 and has an internal opening 8 therein and may be made of glass or hard rubber, said opening is internally threaded as at 9 for engaging with the threaded portion 6 of the said tube 1. The edges of the said spoon are curved upwardly relative to the opening 8 to form a bowl 10 for the said spoon 7. The edges and Serial No. 20,970.

The operation of my device is as follows: the operator fills the end of the tube 1 with the desired powder measuring it by the graduations thereon. The spoon 7 is then screwed onto the threaded portion 6 of my device and the device is ready to use. The spoon end of the device is then inserted into the patients throat and when the end of the spoon is in the desired position the tube is turned until the opening of the spoon is directly over or opposite the infected spot and the bulb A is given a quick squeeze, forcing the powder out of the tube 1 through the spoon 7 and throwing the powder onto the throat with the desired force and precision.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claims I 1. A powder spray comprising a hollow transparent tube having graduations on one end thereof; a detachable member on the graduated end portion; and a rubber bulb on the other end of said tube, adapted to force puffs of air through said tube and detachable member to scatter a powdered m-edicant as directed by said detachable member.
2. A powder spray comprising a hollow transparent tube having graduations on one end thereof, and externally flanged on its other end; a spoon shaped member detachably fastened on the graduated end of said tube to force short puffs of air through said tube and as directed by said spoon shaped SAMUEL P. snow, JR.
