ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 27, 1926.
UNITED STATES BERTI-IA NUSSBAU'M KRAEMER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED BATI-ITUB AND SHOWER CLOSET.
Application filed February 3, 1925. Serial No. 6,574.
T o all 'whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, BERTHA NUSSBAU1\I KRAEMER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combination Bathtub and Shower Closet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to bathroom lixt-ures and has particular reference to an improvement in combination tub and shower bath.
In modern apartments and small houses economy of space is essential and at the present time shower bath nozzles or heads are arranged over the ordinary tub while a curtain is .used to prevent splashing of the water beyond the confines of the tub when the shower is in use. This arrangement has many drawbacks and disadvantages in that it is a well known fact an enclosed closet is the ideal arrangement for a shower bath. Furthermore shower bath curtains become wet and soggy after use and produce an unsightly appearance in a bathroom.
lIn order to overcome the above recited disadvantages it is therefore the outstanding object of the present invention to provide a combined bathtub andl shower closet which in addition to constituting means for taking a shower or tub bath, economizes in the space required for its installation.
The invention furthermore contemplates a combined bath tub and shower closet which is provided with means for facilitating the gaining of access to the pipes andi fittings leading to the bath tub faucet and the shower head or nozzle.
As a still further object the invention comprehends a bathroom fixture which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture and install and which is highly efficient in its purpose.
IVith theabove recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following speciication particularly pointed out inthe appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein, to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawing'sl Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fixture installed.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough. y
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal view taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference 10 designates a bath tub which is provided adjacent onel end with integral upwardly projecting side walls 11-11 and an end wall 12 which extend to the ceiling of the bathroom and which are connected at their upper ends by a top wall 13. A horizontal partition 14 is spaced downwardly from the top wall 13 and is closed at the open side by a depending front wall section 15 the lower end 16 of which depends below the partition 14. One of the side Walls 11 at its upper end is provided with a cut-out portion or doorway 17 closed by a hinged door 18 whereby accessmaybe gained to the compartment or space 19 defined between the partition 14, top wall 13 and the side and end walls 11, 12 and 15. The end of the tub provided with the upwardly projecting walls defines together therewith a shower closet 20. In order to provide means for covering the pipes 21 which lead to the bathtub faucet 22, the shower mixing valves 23 and shower heads or nozzles 24 as well as the fittings therefor, and in order to further provide means for gaining ready access thereto a vertical end wall 25 is provided in spaced parallel relation to the end wall 12 and the said wall 25 is formed with a removable panel 26. For a similar purpose a top panel 27 is removably held in spaced paralel relation to the partition 14 from the upper end of the removable panel 26 and from the lower edge of the depending end 16 of the wall 15. The portions of the pipe 21 which lead to the shower heads or nozzles 24 extend through openings in said removable anels 26 and 27. A valve 28 is provide in the pipe 21 which serves to out off the uppenshower head when it is desired to use on y the lower one. In order to further shower closet which are preferably cast or otherwise formed integral are composed of the usual material from which bath tubs are now constructed so that the fixture does not entail a considerably greater expense whereas the drawbacks and disadvantages of a eurtained shower are eliminated.
In use of the device when it is desired to take a tub bath ythe doors 29 are opened by swinging the same inwardly alongside of and parallel to the upwardly projecting side wa ls ll of the shower closet. Wvhen it is desired to take a shower bath, the bather after entering the shower closet 2O closes 'the doors so that possibility of splashing is eliminated. lVhen repairs or adjustlments are to be made in the pipes 2l or otherittings, the removable panels 26 and 27 may be readily removed for the purpose. The space or compartment 19 may be em- 27 to a point ployed as a close-t or storage space for towels or other articles.
I claim:
l. -In combination a bath tub having upwardly projecting integral side (andi end wall extensions at one end thereof, extending to the ceiling of the bathroom and defining a shower' bath compartment and a pair of swinging doors carried bythe open side of said compartment, the lower ends of said ldoors being approximately flush with the upper edge of the bath tub.
2. In a combined tub and shower bath fixture, a tub having upwardly projecting integral side and end wall extensions at one end thereof and a top wall over said extensions deining together with the tub at one of its ends a shower compartment, a spaced parallel end Wall within the end wall extension and a downwardly spaced top Wall defining compartments for accommodating the pipes and fittings leading to the bath tubv and shower fixtures, said inner parallel Walls having removable panel sections Jfor gaining accessl to the plumbing iixtures.
