MERRILL A. TYLER, OF NEW DURHAM, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOB TO FRANKLIN W. COBURN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,948, dated December 22, 1874 application filed October 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MERRILL A. TYLER, of New Durham, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Knives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In said drawing, Figures 1 and 2 are opposite side views of my improved implement. Fig. 3 is a side view, showing the guard turned down into a position to enable the blade or knife to be ground or sharpened. Fig. 4. is a central and longitudinal section taken at right angles to the plane of the blade. Fig. 5 is a front-end view of the implement.
My invention is an improvement on that class of devices employed for trimming the edges of boots and shoes; and consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, A denotes the handle; B, the blade, and (J the guard. D is a metallic bolster affixed to the upper end of the handle, and having a metallic bar or jaw, F, which extends nearly to the bottom of the chamber formed axially in the handle, and has an annular head, a, on its lower end, such head having a hole made centrally through it. G is a semicircular wedge, which is formed with an incline, b, at its upper, and another incline, c, at its lower end, the former acting against the interior of the bolster, and the latter against the interior of the head a, the object of these two inclines being to clamp the knife, both at the upper and lower ends of its tang or part within the handle. H is a screw which passes through a metallic cap, at, disposed on the outer end of the handle, and works in a female screw formed in the lower end of the wedge Gr, as shown in Fig. 4. The tang of the knife, being passed through the bolster, and between the bar D and the wedge G, may be firmly clamped by simply rotating the screw H in the proper direction. By thus clamping the tang of the blade at the two points, as described, the knife is most effectually secured in position under the great strain often brought to bear upon it.
The guard O is formed with a projecting lip, e, to extend over the end of the blade, the latter resting in a notch formed therein, by which the blade is preserved from lateral deflection. This guard is hinged or pivoted to the handle or bolster D by means of a screwpivot, g, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, such guard being provided with a shoulder, Z, so formed as to allow the guard to be turned forward, and away from the edge of the knife, and into the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus enabling the knife to be readily ground or sharpened; but when the knife is in the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, such shoulder rests firmly on the top of the bolster, and thereby preserves the guard rigidly in position while the knife is in use.
I do not claim, broadly, combining with the handle and blade of a sole-edge-trimming knife a removable and adjustable guard to extend around the point of the blade in order to prevent the latter from nicking or cutting the upper while trimming the sole, as I am aware that such is not new.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a sole-edgetrimming knife, substantially as described, the guard (J,- in combination with the blade A and handle B, when the guard is formed with the shoulder Z, and pivoted to the handle, in manner as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the bolster D and.
the bar or jaw F, of the wedge G, provided with the two inclines b and 0, and the clamping-screw H, as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence'of two witnesses.
MERRILL A. TYLER.
