Description

Dec. 29, 1925' w. BEST KEY CHAIN REEL Filed April 5, 1925 INVENTOR M555 ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 29, 1925 UNITED STATES WILLIAM BEST, 0] CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
KEY-CHAIN REEL.
Application filed April 3, 1925. Serial mlzaa'oe.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BEST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident" of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Key-Chain Reels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in key chain reels, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein. described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved device over that set forth in my prior Patent No. 1,485,663. of March 4. 1924. These improvements lie largely in a construction which cuts down the weight and the size, and the cost of manufacturing the device, and at the same time provides a construction which 0 erates equally as well as that set forth in t e prior patent.
A further object of my invention is to provide novel means for securing the parts together, so as to facilitate the assembly of the device. I
A further object of my invention is to provide a device in which the parts may be made of stampings, rather than castings thus decreasing the weight and the cost of the device.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this 'invention, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of the device as attached to a belt,
li'lgure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an assembly view showing the parts in position for placing together.
In carrying out my invention. I provide a thin circular disk 1. to which is secured a bearing cylinder 2, by means of a central rivet 2'. This bearing cylinder, as will be observed from Figure 2, has a book 3 in its wall, which is formed by punching out a portion and then bending the hook or tongue inwardly.
A spiral spring 4 is provided. One end of this spring is bent back upon itself in the form of a hook, as shown at 5, which is arranged to engage the book 3, as will be here- At 8 I have shown a barrel. This consists I of an outer portion having a peripheral flange 9, and being tapered from the flange to the outer edge 10 to form a cup-shaped member. Within this cup-shaped member is an interior cup-shaped member in the'form of a cylinder 11, which is secured to the member 8 by means of a stub shaft 12 which rivets the parts together. The stub shaft 12 is slotted, as shown at 13.
An outer casing 14 is provided. this being in the nature of a cup-shaped member having an opening 15 for the entrance of the chain 16. The latter is preferably of the ball type. The inner end of this chain 16 is passed through an opening 1.7 in the cylinder, and out through a slot 18. where the end I10s h0(l)ked so as to secure the chain to the arre 'In assembling the device, the spring 4 is.-
laced in the interior of the cylinder bearing 2, the hook 5 engagin the hook 3. The barrel is slipped over the fiearing cylinder 2, the slot 13 in the stub shaft 12 straddling the inner end of the spiral spring 4 at 6. The casing 14 is slipped over the barrel and is secured to the plate 1 by means of screws 19 which also pass through a U-shaped member 20, through which the belt 21 is designed to be passed so as to suspend the reel from the belt.
Prior to the placing of the barrel over the bearing cylinder 2, the chain 16, which, as stated, passes through the opening 15 in the casing, is wound on the barrel from the flange 9 toward the end 10 of the barrel. With the device constructed as described, the pulling of the chain outwardly will cause the barrel 8 to revolve on the hearing cylinder 2, and will wind up the spring 4. On the release of tension, the spring will unwind and will rotate the barrel 8 in the opposite direction, until the key ring 22 has has been drawn backwardly to its normal position.
I claim:
1. A key chain reel comprising a cylindrical bearing member, a spiral spring disposed within said bearing member. a barrel mounted for revolution on said bearing member, said barrel having a certain stub shaft slotted to receive one end of said spring, a
chain wound around said barrel, and a casing enclosing said barrel and having an opening for permitting the movement of the chain.
2. A key chain reel comprising a plate, a cylindrical beari-ng member secured to said plate and having a hook, a spiral sprin having one end bent to form a hoo to engage the hook on said barrel, the opposite end being bent inwardly, a barrel member having a cylindrical portion arranged to fit over said bearing member and having a tapered portion exterior of said cylindrical portion, a chain carried by said interior tapered portion, said barrel having a stub shaft slotted to receive the inner end of said spiral spring, an exterior casing arranged to fit over said barrel and having an opening for the passage of said chain, and means for securing said casing to said plate.
3. A key chain reel comprising-a plate, a cylindrical bearing member secured to said plate and having a hook, a spiral spring avmglone end bent to form a hook to enga t e hook on said barrel, the opposite en being bent inwardly, a barrel member having a cylindrical portion arran ed to fit over said bearing member and aving a tapered portion exterior of said 0 lindrical portion, a chain carried b sai exterior tapered portion, said barre having a stub shaft slotted to receive the inner end of said' spiral sprin an exterior casing arranged to fit over sari barrel and having an openin for the passage of said chain, a U-shape belt encircling member, and means for securing said belt encircling member and said casing to said plate.
