ARTHUR WATSON PIMM, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNO'R 0F ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH HUSBAND, OF WINNETKA, ILLINOIS. I V
INDEX BOOK AND METHOD OF PRODUCING THE SAME.
Application filed June 15, 1925. Serial No. 37,385.
To all whom' it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR WA'rsoN 'PIMM, a subject of the King of England, residing at 36 Southwark Bridge Road, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index Books and Methods of Producing the Same, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to the indexing of books in the production thereof where the cost must be kept at a minimum, and including such books as telephone directories, city directories, and the like. A thumb index at the edge of the book is very desirable, but heretofore has been prohibitive on account of cost. In the indexing of books as heretofore practiced the leaves of the entire volume have been trimmed from each index sheet forward to the first leaf of the book separately, or in groups, so as to provide for the successively longer projecting portions of leaves. This operation has been too expensive to permit of the provision of such indices upon the cheap class of volumes referred to.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for the production of indices without complicationv in the matter of trimming the edges of the leaves.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a volume having an index provided by the method of the present invention.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a completed volume with the edges trimmed, and with the index leaves turned in in the position occupied while trimming the leaves.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing one index leaf turned in and others thereof turned out to a position for use.
In the production of the book according to the method of the present invention, index leaves are supplied in the book either by binding the same with the other leaves, or by inserting such leaves after the volume is bound.
The index leaves referred to are desirably formed of a better grade of paper than that commonly used for the cheap class of volumes in question, and therefore are desirably supplied as inserts.
The size of the index leaves is such as to extend beyond the remaining leaves when the latter are trimmed and the index leaves are extended to their full size.
As shown, the index leaves are provided I with an index character, and have a portion oftheir length below the portion carrying the index character of such an extent as to aline with the trimmed edges of the body of the volume.
hen placed within the volume in the make up thereof, and prior to the trimming of the leaves of the volume each of the index leaves, as 10, is folded upon itself, as at 11, so as to bring the portion 12 into the body of the volume, and to entirely conceal the index tabs 13 upon which portion the index characters 14 are carried.
The volume made up with the index leaves 10 folded inwardly as described and each index leaf properly notched and marked, is
trimmed, and may be delivered to the user in this form. The user, in the use of the book, turns out each index leaf upon the line 11 to the position shown in a portion of Fig. 2, when a full thumb indexed volume results, with little added expense over the former cost of the non-indexed volumes. The sheet' bearing the index characters may form a portion of the contents of the book, or it may be left blank, or it may be used for display advertising as desired, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Minor changes in the physical embodiment of the invention, the line at which the leaves are folded, or in the method of production may be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A method of producing an indexed volume which comprises the binding of the volume, providing the same with a set of index leaves having portions adapted to project beyond the edges of the finished volume, such portions bearing index characters, folding the index leaves to bring the index portion thereof between the-remaining leaves of the volume, trimming the edge of the remaining leaves whereby the unfolding of the index leaves will cause the index bearing portions thereof to project be yond said trimmed edges.
2. An indexed volume comprising a plurality of trimmed leaves, index leaves in- 5 terposed between said trimmed leaves and having a fold line substantially parallel with the bound edges of the leaves about which said index leaf is folded during the process of manufacture, the unfolded index leaves having the recessed portion of their 10 edges substantially in alignment with the trimmed edges of the volume.
