To all whom concern: 7
'Be it known that I KURT -W.mnnn, a citizen of Wurttemberg, who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the 5 United States, and resident of New -York city, county of New York, State of New York, have invented an Improvement 1n A paratus for Making stretchable Paper, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
This invention relates to the manufacture of paper that is made stretchable by creping or crinkling so as to render it better adapte for wrapping, packing, case lining and like uses. The invention is carried out with the use of a suction box or device associated with the roll from which the paper is crped in a manner developed from my earlier application Serial No. 346,066, filed Dec. 19, 1919. It has long been recognized as desirable to provide a wrapping or lining paper that is stretchable in both directions, 1. e., both transversely and longitudinally of the web,
but so far as I am aware no practicable.
method or means for attaining this end has hitherto been devised. I have found that by the employment of a specially designed suction box in combination with a s cial crping roll and doctor, the latter equlpped with corrugations or like formation, the paper may be crinkled or crped so as to be stretchable to a very substantial degree in both directions. In accordance with my invention this desirable double crping eflect may be produced in the paper without requiring t e same to be previously soaked or saturated with moisture as has been hither-.
to considered necessary and the invention is also applicable to the crinkling of waxed or asphalted' aper, and. alsoin the treatment'of fresh y made paper,'i. e., as an ad- The forego' and other ob'ects and advantages of the mve'ntion will more fully appear from the .following detailed description, and the distinctive featuresof'novelty will be thereafter pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof;
"cial form of doctor co-operative t erewith;
Fig. 6 is a fragmenta detail view showing a portion of the crping roll in longitudinal section and on an enlar ed scale; and
Fig. 7 is a view showing in elevation and also 1n edge view a sample of the paper produced by the invention and illustrating the novel type of creping thereof.
10 indlcates an upright frame-work equipped with spaced apart ring bearings .11, 12 in which are mounted the ends of the hollow 'creping roll or drum 13. This roll presents a corrugated outer surface throughout its intermediate and operative portion but its end ortlons are smooth as indicated at 13 to t into the bearings 11, 12. This hollow roll may be rotated in any suitable manner, this being accomplished as shown by a belt 14 enga 'ng one end of the roll and driven by an e ectric motor 15. The paper to be treated is shown as supplied from a roll R which is mounted on supports 16 and the paper web W is thence led around a guide roll 17 and through a moistening tank 18 passing around a roll 19 therein 11 on to the crelping to be c earl understood that the use of this wetting ta 18 is not necessary and that the paper may be either moistened to a ater or less, extent-or waxed, or otherwise im- Eiegnated. just before the crp-ing, or it may crped entirel dry by the apparatus to be described. e creping drum 13 as already stated resents an operative'peripheral surface t at is corrugated in sinuous curves from end to end, i. e. it isformed ;with a 891188 of cod a art circumferential grooves alternating wit ribs, the peaks of which ribs and the valleys of the grooves are of ourvin outline, as indicated at 13. The drum is a through throng out the operative extent thereof indicated at 13, the size and charactor of these perforations being determined by the character of crping required and also drum, though at this pomt it is- 7 produced with a multiplicity of relativel small perforations there-- suction through said perforations, and a? doctor co-operative with said drum, the operative surface of said drumhaving a series of transverse corrugations therein, and said suction box conver 'ng backwardly j from a point adjacent sai doctor to a sub- 7 stantial angular distance around the drum.
2. Apparatus of the kind described, comprising a hollow rotatable drum having" apertures therethrough at intervals throughout the operative extent thereof, a suction box mounted within saiddrum adapted to exert suction through said. apertures; and a.
doctor co-operative with said drum,. said suction box converging from each sidetowards the longitudinal center of said drum backwardly from said. doctor through a substantial angular extent of the drum, said drum having a series of sinuous corrugations on its operative surface and said doctor having a" serrated edge fitting said corrugations. V
. 3. Apparatus for; making stretchable paper, comprising ahollow rotatable drum presenting sinuous corrugations on the operative surface thereof and having perforation therethroughat intervals, a suction box mounted within said drum and operative through said perforations, and a doctor having an operative edge formed to fit said corrugateddrum surface, said suction box having a forward portion adjacent said doctor and of approximately the width thereof, w i
and thence converging backwardly from each side toward the longitudinal center of the drum through a substantial angular extent thereof for the pur ose stated.
In testimony whereo I have signed my name to thi specification.
