Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
HAMILTON D. LOOKWOOD, OF GHARLESTQWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.'155,034, dated September 15, 1874; application filed August 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMILTON D. LooK- WOOD, of Gharlestown, in the county of Mid-. dlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valves, of which the following is a specification: I
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved valve. Fig. 2 is the same view as Fig. 1, the cap and its attachments being removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line a: as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is a short tube, upon the ends of which are formed necks and rounded heads to receive the ends of rubber tubes B, and upon which said tubes are held by the contraction of their ends, around said necks. Upon one side of the middle part of the tube A is formed a circular disk, 0, having a ring-flange, 0', formed around its edge. In the center of the disk 0 is formed a hole, 60, leading into the cavity of the tube A, and which is surrounded with a low tubular flange of a little less height than the flange c of the disk 0. In the disk 0, between the flanged hole a and the flange c, is formed a second hole, a also leading into the cavity of the pipe/A. The pipe A is closed between the holes a and a? by a partition, a so that anything passing through said pipe A must pass out through one of the holes a a and in through the other, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3. Upon the outer surface of the flange c is formed a screw-thread, into which fits a screw-thread formed upon the inner surface of the flange of the cap D. In the center of the cap D is formed a hole, in which is secured a pin or presser-foot, E, the outer end of which passes through the lower arm of the spring F, and is attached or swiveled-to the upper arm of said spring. The lower arm of the spring F is secured to the cap D, and upon its end is formed a spring-catch, f, in which is formed a catch-hole to receive and hold the end of the upper arm of the said spring F when the valve is closed. G is a rubber disk, fitting into the cap D, and the edge of which rests upon the edge of the flange 0, so that it is secured in place by screwing on the said cap D.
By this construction, by pressing the upper arm of the spring F towardthe cap D, the pin or presser-foot is forced inward, which presses the middle part of the rubber disk G down upon the flange of the hole a and closes the valve securely. At the same time the end of the upper arm of the spring F is caught by the spring catch f, which holds the valve closed until released by pressing back the catch f ,when the elasticity of the rubber disk G raises the pin or presser-foot E, and the valve is again open. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the spring F and springcatch f with the cap D, pin or presser-foot E, rubber disk Gr, flanged disk 0, and flanged hole a leading into the pipe A, substantially as herein shown and described.
HAMILTON D. LOOKWOOD.
