H. c. METZGER DILATOR Fil ed Feb. 4, 1924 QJJHJMQ/ Patented July 21, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DILATOR.
Application filed. February 4, 1924. Serial No. 690,503.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY C. METZGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dilators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dilators and consists of the novel features herein shown, de-
scribed and claimed.
An object of my invention is to make a simple device for use in the rectum for treating piles and the like.
The drawings illustrate the invention.
'15 Fig. 1 is a perspective of a supporter embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view analogous to Fig. 1 and showing the addition of a non-metallic cushion.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on a plane parallel with Fig. 1 and on the line 33 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 4; is a horizontal cross section on the line 14: of Fig. 3.
The details of the dilator are as follows:
The upper or inner part 1 is cylindrical in cross section and has a rounded upper end 2 and a tapered neck 3 extending from the lower end of the portion 1. A flange 4: is
formed at the extreme lower end of the neck 3 and a pintle 5 extends from the flange. The cross piece 6 fits against the flange 4 and the pintle 5 extends through the center of the cross piece 6 and is riveted to hold the parts together.
The cross piece 6 has wings 7 V and 8 extending in opposite directions or in a straight line relative to the flange 4, said cross piece being slightly bowed when seen in elevation or sections as in Figs. 1 and 2.
A bore 9 extends from the rounded end 2 through the body to the end of the pintle 5. A cushion 10 of antiseptic cotton or any suitable materialmay be placed around the neck 3 against the cross piece 6. In some cases the lower end of the bore 9 may be corked or plugged or the bore may be omitted.
The dilator is to be used in the rectum as in treating piles and other troubles and may be completely inserted into the rectum, and is preferably made of aluminum or other non-corrodible material.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a cylindrical body having a rounded outer end, a gradually tapered neck extending from the other end of the body, there being a cylindrical portion at the end of the tapered neck providing a shoulder from which extends a nipple. and a separate cross piece secured about said nipple and abutting said shoulder.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HARRY O. METZGER.
