To al?. @1i/wm may concern: i
Be it known that l, Env/*ann W'. CARROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'eston, in the county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Post. Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to post construction, and aims to provide novel means for supporting a post to insure against deterioration of the post at its base.
Another obJect of the invention is to provide a separable post, novel means being provided for `locking the post to its base.
A further object of the invention is the provisionof novel means for securing the fence structure to the post, eliminating the use ofnails, bolts' or similar securing means.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details o-f construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being` understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view disclosing a post constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure Qis a fragmental elevational view of the post, a portion of the base being inv section.
Figure 3` is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4; is a sectional view through the upper portion of a post base and disclosing` a modified form of the invention.
` Figure 5' is a sectional view on line 5--5 of Figure 4L.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a post base which is formed of concrete or similar plastic material and provided with a head 6 at its upper end, which head is formed with an opening to accommodate the post 7 associated therewith. l
The bottom wall of the opening of the head 6 is inclined as at 8, so that any moisture entering between the post `and its base, may drain therefrom, openings 9 communieating with the opening in the head to allow the fluid to pass therefrom. Formed integral with the wallof the opening in the head 6- is an inwardly extended lug 19 adapted to enter the groove ll when the post section 7 is positioned vin the head, the groove 11 being in communication with the groove 12 formed at right angles with the groove 11 so that whenthe post is positioned in the head and slightly rotated, the lug will lock the post to its base in a manner as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing.
The post 7 carries suitable fence securing irons 14: whereby the wires of the fence may be hooked thercover, the bottom wire of the fence structure which is indicated at 15 being positioned in the groove 16 formed in the outer surface of the head 6. This `groove 16 is curved-upwardly, atits ends so that when the bottom wire lis positioned, it is necessary to stretch the wire f 15 into position.
In order that the post will be held firm it is contemplated to position sand or gravel, which is indicated by the reference character 17 and shown by Figure 2 of the drawing, the sand or gravel permitting the moisture to pass downwardly therethrough.
As shown by Figure 4 of the drawing, the post vwhich is indicated by the reference character 18 is formed with a groove 19 communicating with the groove 20 that is formed in the outer surface of the post at a point adjacent to the lower end thereof, the groove 19 communicating with a groove 21 formed in the post 18, the groove 21 also communicating with a groove 22 also formed in the head of the base.
Then it is desired to connectthe post 18 with its base, roller 23 is dropped into the registering grooves, which roller gravitates to a position as shown by Figure 4c locking the post against movement within its base. From the foregoing it will he seen that ifa fence post becomes broken or otherwise rendered incapable of supporting a fence, the fence post may be readily and easily replaced.
What is claimed as new iszi 1. In a fence post construction, a base section having a post opening and having a groove formed therein, said grooves being formed with a right angled end porton, a post section having a groove adapted to register with the first mentioned groove fwhen the post is fitted in the base section,
and a roller of a width to extend into both 10 and a, roller adapted to be fted in Jhe grooves to lock the post Section to the base section.
In testimony that I Claim the foregoing:y ne: my own, T have hereto nred my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDVARD WILLIAM CARROLL.
