Be it lrnown that I, JOHN R. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercisers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention particularly relates to an exerciser which can be permanently or detachably secured to a wall or the fioor of a room and which can be used in a variety of exercises.
The main object of my invention is to provide an enerciser of simple and improved construction.
A more specific object of my invention is to provide an improved exerciser of the character described which may be adjusted to meet the strength of the user.
Other objects of my invention will become apparent as the detail description progresses, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, wherein-e Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an exerciser embodying the novel features of my invention.

Referring for the present to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the reference character 10 designates a base forming a part of my improved exerciser. The base 10 is provided with an outwardly projecting flange 11 having apertures 12 permitting the base to be secured to a wall or the floor of aroom by' bolts or the like. It is apparent that the base 10 may be detachably or permanently secured in any desired position so as to meet the particular desires of the user.
The base 10 is provided with an upwardly extending annular flange13 having a spherical surface 14, which togetherV with a spherical surface 15 of a plate 16 is adapted to form a socket for a ball 17 j ournaled therein. 'Ihe plate 16 is loosely pivoted to the base Serial No. 649,398.
10 as indicated at 18, a bent plate 19 being provided for this purpose. The bent plate 19 is rigidly secured to the base 10 by means of a plurality of screws 20. The free end of the loosely pivoted plate 16 is notched as at 21 to receive a boss 22 formed integral with the base 10 and furnishing guide means for the plate 16 in its movement. A pin 23 slidably journaled in the boss 22 provides means, together with a helical compression spring 24 and a knurled nut 25, for yieldingly forcing the plate 16 toward the ball 1'?. The pin 23 has a portion 26 of rectangular cross section which is adapted to slide in a similarlyv shaped aperture 2'? in the boss 22. The helical compression spring has one end thereof resting against the plate 16 and the other end thereof resting against a head 28 formed upon the lower end of the pin 23. The nut 25 is threaded upon the other end of the pin 23 and may be employed to increase or decrease the tension of the spring 24 so as to increase or decrease the pressure under which a friction lining 29 interposed between the plate 16 and the ball 17 will frictionally engage the ball 17. It will be noted that a friction lining 30 is also interposed between the angular flange V13 and the ball 17.
Projecting from the ball 17 is a shaft 32 which comprises a tapered plug 33 driven into the ball. Secured to the outer end of the tapered plug 33 is a tube 34 having at its upperl end a. hand grip 35 which is rotatably journaled upon a sleeve 36 driven into the outer end of the tube 34. The axesl of the tube 34, hand grip 35, and sleeve 36 are coincident. The hand grip 35 is held in place upon the sleeve 36 by means of a plug 37 driven into the outer end of the sleeve 36.
In the operation of the device, the user grasps the hand grip 35 and angular-ly displaces the movable elements of the exerciser about the center of the ball 17 against the resistance of the frictional engagement between the ball 17 and the friction linings 29 and 30. r1`he exerciser, as hereinbefore stated, may be secured either to a wall or the floor of a room, or to any other suitable object, and the user may employ the enerciser in a variety of exercises. The user, by means of the nut 25 and its attending mechanism, may adjust the pressure under which the friction linings 29 and 30 engage the ball 17. The nut 57 may be adjusted to canse the spring 5G to increase or d crease the pressure With which the friction linings el and l5 engage the ball 43. This construction vfll permit the user to vary the pressure ol' the liriction linings against the ball to a point or value which Will meet his or her strength.
As the exerciser may be employed in exercises in which the shaft is moved tor- Wardly and backn'ardly in a single plane, the ball ot the eiierciser in these exercises may be considered as a member rotatably journaled with respect to the base ol the exerciser. however, the ball and socket construction `which l have shown and describe-d is advantageous in that the ezierciser may be iisefl in connection with a wider range oi: eimreises than would be possible vwere the eroi eonstructf r'lh a rotatable member which was only "evoluble around a singl) axis ot rotation. ldoreover, by providing a single spring Which may be adjusted by a singlemeans to vary the pressure exerted on the ball received Within the socket l simplify the construction and operation of my device very materially in that a person desiring` to va the pressure merely turns the nut or 5T as the case may be, the time and ell'ort needed being thereby reduced to a minimum.
