UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS EH11. (HOB-UP, O! IANSI'IELD, OHIO.
COMBINATION RUBBER. SIGNBOABD OB PANET; DETACHABLE LETTERS AND .IIGUBEB. Y
Application filed January 22, 1923. Serial No. 614,208.
bination Rubber Signboards or "Panels with Detachable Letters and Figures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sign boards and the like devices in combination with detachable letters and figures, and to the use of rubber as material for such, and has for one of its objects to furnish a si n board o panel with a rubber surface an articles representing letters and figures adapted to be attached thereon without the use of any binding substance. whatsoever.
Another object of the invention is to furnish a sign board or panel of such a nature that articles representing letters, figures, etc. may be attached thereon and detached therefrom without leavin any marks or impressions or otherwise dis re or injure the rubber surface of the board or the letters or figures themselves.
A further object of the invention is to furnish a sign board or panel that may consist of glass, covered with transparent rubber sheeting, thus roviding a device of this kind that may e illuminated in darkness b placing a light behind it. A further o ject of the invention is to provide means of constructing a sign-board and the like for advertisement purposes or the like of a substance that can be washed and cleaned of dust, dirt, or other debris, so that its cohesive quality will not be aflected.
1 Furthermore, the object of this invention is to furnish devices and articles of this nature adapted to be used in laces of business, public institutions, etc, or advertising and announcement purposes-and, in-miniature sizes, to provide an educational, interesting, sanitary and unbreakable toy for children.
With these and other objects in view, the characteristic features and-scope of the invention will bereadily understood from the following description taken in connection with the drawing forming a part thereof wherein: I
Fi 1 is a erspective view of the sign boar or pane with a pigeon-holed cabinetattached to the back thereof.
Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate the letters and figures and their construction.
Figure 4 isa detail cross-sectional view.
The board and panel, as represented by A in Fig. 1, is generally to be constructed of wood, pasteboard or similar material and the front surface (or both surfaces) is covered with crude rubber sheeting or with a rubber compound or rubberized fabric, that have retained the cohesive property natural to crude rubber, and may be of any suitable color. However, the board or panel may also consistof plate glass covered with a transparent rubber sheeting; when this is the case, a light may be placed behind the board or panel at night, thus providing an illuminated sign. The board or panel may have attached to the back part thereof a case or pigeon-holed cabinet as represented by C in Fig. 1, and wherein the letters and figures may be stored when not in use. The cabinet may be opened from the back part thereof, or, as shewn in Fig. 1 the board may be provided with hinges or hooks to permit it to be opened. The board or panel may also be suitably Igranlg'ed as shown in the drawing represented The letters and figures as represented by D in Fig. 1, and as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, have a base of crude rubber, or a rubber com ound or rubberized fabric that have retained the co-adhesive qualit of raw rubber, and are mounted with vu canized rubber, metal, porcelain or an other suitable material, cemented or otherwise fastened to the said base. E indicates a body .or base portion com osed of crude rubber. Reference numeral indicatesthe face of a letter which mayi consist of vulcanized .i'ubber, metal, or other material which is secured to the outer portion of the casethrough the medium of any well-known adhesive material. Or the letters and figures ma be made entirely out of crude rubber, rub r compound or rubberized fabric.
The letters and figures are placed on to the rubber surface of the board or panel by a slight pressure and retained in positron by means of the cohesive nature of the rubber. They are detached from the board by a slight ull. Attention is called to the fact that t e invention herein described consists of providing a cover for a base which is inherently cohesive or adhesive and in providing objects such as letters, figures, emblems, or the like and making them of the same or similar material which is inherently cohesive or adhesive, whereby without the agency of any additional adhesive material a sign, advertisement or the like, cafi be made on the base cover and changed to suit the particular business or line of advertisement desired at a particular time. In other words so that the emblems, letters, pr figures or other objects, can be changed periodically and without difficulty and without in any way marring, changing, manipulating, or affecting the base or cover in changing, removing, attachin or detaching the objects from the baseboard It also provides means if desired, of facing the objects with different kinds of material such as porcelain, metal, glass or the like, by the use of additional adhesive material.
It further provides means of placing and arranging objects of different colors and different combination of colors, in different positions and means of reflecting different colors through a. base of transparent material.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that What I claim is:
1. The combination of a base of suitable material, having a sheet of crude rubber attached thereto, which has retained its cohesiveness. objects having a base of crude rubber which are adapted to be mounted upon said crude rubber base and held thereto at any position by the mutual cohesiveness of the crude rubber cover of the base the medium of additional adhesive material, as and for the purpose described.
2. Thecombination of a base composed of transparent material, one surface of said transparent material being covered with a cohesive rubber compound, objects representing pre-determ-ined characters made of crude rubber material mounted on said base and being adapted to be afiixed thereto by mutual cohesiveness without the use of any adhesive material except the binding effect incident to crude rubber, said objects being also adapted to be detached therefrom each other Without showing the effect of said attachment, as described and set forth,
3. The combination of a receptacle having a series of compartments for the reception of different kinds of emblems, a member made of crude rubber attached thereto which has retained its adhesiveness, and objects made of crude rubber which have retained their cohesiveness mounted and supported on said crude rubber member at predetermined locations by the mutual cohesiveness only of the crude rubber member and said objects, and separate similar objects of different material adapted to be attached to the first named objects by the interposition of adhesive material, as described and set forth.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signa ture.
THOMAS EMIL 'GJORUP.
