ARTHUR A. KRAEUTER, OF SOUTH ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T KROYDON CO.,
A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY. v
GOLF CLUB.
Application led January 18, 1924. Serial No. 686,972. y
`To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ARTHUR A. KRAEUTER, a. citizen of the United States, residing at bouth Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf. Clubs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled l0 in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to iinprovements in golf-clubs; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly to a novel construction of handle for golfclubs and lferrule therefor, vwith a view of providing the leather-bound handle-portion of the golf-club with a means, in the. forni of -a neat and ornamental end-ferrule, which with constant use of the golf-club, will prevent the usual unsightly unravelling of the leather or other material employed as a binding.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a golf-club of the general character hereinafter set forth, the handle-portion of the club being bound spirally with leather or similar material, Iand the end of the handle-portion be- -ing `topped off with means, preferably in the form of an ornamental ferrule to prevent unravelling of the leather or other material employed to produce the handleportion of the golf-club. i
The invention has for its further object to provide in connection with the end-portion of the leather-bound handle-portion of agolf-club, 'a ferrule having upon its inside a taper, which as thep ferrule is screwed upon the end of the handle jambs down upon the leather and firmly plnches it, so
that any possibility of the leather unravelling at the end of the handle-portion is absolutely overcome. v
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With the Various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists,
primarily, in the production of a golf-club having a leather-boundhandle-portion provided with means t prevent unravelling of the leather; and, the invention consists furthermore, in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, `as well as in the details of the construction of the said'` parts, all lof which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification. l
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in' which Figure l is a view of a golf-club provided with a leather-bound handle-portion and a ferrule therefor, all arranged and made according to the principles of the present invention; Figure 2 is a view, on an enlarged scale, showing in elevation, a fragmentary portion of the screw-threaded end of the leather-bound handle-portion of the golfclub, with the ferrule in position upon said screw-threaded end, the ferrule, however, being shown in vertical section; and Figure 3 is an end view of the parts represented in said Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view similar toFigure 2, in which the arrangement of the screwthre-ads of the end of the leather-bound handle-portion and of the -ferrule are avrranged in a reverse manner from that shown in said Figure 2; and Figure 5 is an end view of a slightly modified form of ferrule. Figure 6 is a detail sectional representation, on a still larger scale, of fragmentary parts o f the screw-threaded end of the .handle-portion of the golf-club and of the ferrule, said View illustrating the meta-l, ferrule.
provided with a sharp thread, and the wooden screw-threaded part of the handleportion with a blunt thread.
Similar characters of reference are employed in al1 of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the usual stick of a golf-club, provided with a suitably formed off-set portion, as 2, see Figure 2, which is vmade with a tapered part/3 from which extends a reduced portion fl which is provided with an arrangement of screw-threads 5. These screwthreads being made in the wood must of necessity be blunt, substantially as indicated at 6 in Figures' 2 and` 6 of the drawings.V- In the arrangement of the parts, as indicated in Figure 2 of the drawings, the screw-threads are left-hand threads, while in the construction represented in Figure 4 of the drawings, which in all respects is similar to the construction shown in said .Figure 2, the screw-threads vare right'- hand threads.
The usual spirally wound binding of leather, or similar suitable material, is indicated by the reference-character 7, the said binding as will beevident from an inspection of 'Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings, being wound and terminatingabout the offset portion 2 of the stick 1, as at8, thelayers of the material 7 being secured in the usual manner by means of cement, glue, or the like. In order to prevent loosening or unravelling of the terminating portions 8 or the binding 7, as is so common in the construction of the handle-portions .of vgolfclubs, as at present made, I employ a metal ferrule or cap, of the construction to be pres entlyfmore fully described, the said ferrule or cap'serving a two-fold purpose z-one as an ornament for the end ot' the golf-club, and the other to provide a retaining means which prevents any possibility of the terminating portion 8 ofthe binding unravelling or fraying, as will be evident.
The construction of the ferrule lshown more particularly in Figures 2,3 and 4 of the drawings, consists essentially of a tubular body` 9, the outer surface-portion or which may be suitably convexed, or otherwise shaped. Within itsy tubular portion, the said body 9 is tapered, as atv 10 and 11, corresponding to the ta ered surfaces of the ' parts 2 and 3 of the stick 1.',Above the ta'- pered part 11, the said ferrule is internally screw-threaded, as at 12, the said screwthreads corresponding to the arrangement of left or right-hand screw-threads 5,'shown in said Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings, but
the screw-threads 12' being made sharp, so-
that when the ferrule is screwed upon the reduced. portion 4, the sharp screw-threads 12 will bite into the wood, whereby apermanent and positive assemblage of the ferrule ywith relation to the end of the golf-club will be the result; Furthermore, the taper inside of the ferrule pinches the terminal endportion of the leather binding, thereby jambing the leather, and producing a very tight and fixed position of the ferrule upon the handle-portion of the `goli-club. If desired the internally screw-threaded portion of the'ferrule maybe left open, as at 13, through which the end-surface 14 of the stick, after being properly finished off, is exposed, as shown in said Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings.
This, however, is not essential, and in lieu of the ferrule I may use a cap 15 which yis provided with a closed end 16,^as will be eviabout one of said tapered portions of the` stick, and a ferrule mounted upon'theendportion of said stick, said ferrule having internally tapered portions corresponding. to the tapered portions of the stick,'all arranged :to jamb and pinchv the end ofthe leather binding to prevent fraying or unravelling of the binding.-
, 2. A; golf-club comprising a stick formed withy tapered portions, and a screw-threadedl end-member extending from one of said tapered portions, a leather binding wound about a portion of said stick and'about the other tapered portion of the stick, and a ferrule mounted upon the end-portion of the stick, said errule having an internally screw-threadedpart screwed upon the screwthreaded end-member of'the stick, and said ferrule having internally tapered portions corresponding to the tapered portions ofthe stick, all arranged to jamb and pinch the end of the leather binding toprevent fraying or unravelling of the binding. f
3. A golf-club comprising a stick of wood formed with tapered portions, and a screwthreaded end-member extending from one of said tapered portions, the screw-threads of said end-member being blunt, a leather bind ing wound .about a portion of said stick and about the other tapered portion of the stick, and a ferrule mounted upon the end-portion of the stick, said ferrule having an internally screw-threaded part composed of sharp screw-threads, screwed'` upon the screw-threaded enti-member with said sharp threads biting into said end-member, and said errule having internally tapered portions corresponding to the tapered portions of the stick, all arraugedto jamb yand pinch the end of the leather binding to prevent fraying or unravelling of the binding In testimony, that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this January, day of 11th. 1924.
