Description

Dec. 16, 1924- 1,519,944 1 A. W. WARSEN GRIPPER FOR PRINTING PRESSES AND PAPER USING MACHINES Filed May 1, 1922 a/fi% By A TTOR/VEVS Patented Dec. 16, 1924,
UNITED AUGUST W. WAR-SEN, 01E BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
GEIPPEE FOR PRINTING PRESSES AND PAPER-USING MACHINES.
Application filed May 1, 1922. Serial No. 557,755.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST 7. lVARsnN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gripper for Printing Presses and Paper-Using Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to grippers for printing presses and particularly to an improved gripper provided with hinge members acting as a clamp for holding the parts in position.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved form of gripper for printing presses wherein the gripper may be quickly and easily applied and removed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gripper easily positioned and at the same time presenting a resilient gripping action.
A still further object, more specifically, is to provide a gripper for printing presses in which the clamping portion of the gripper comprises a pair of hinge sections operated by a clamping screw for rigidly clamping the gripper at any point along the gripping bar quickly and easily.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through a gripper bar showing the gripper embodying the invention applied thereto, said gripper being disclosed in elevation.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the struc ture shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates agripper shaft which is a well known part of a printing press and 2 the gripping finger which is rigidly secured to the gripping jaw 3 in any suitable manner, as for instance, by the screws 4 and 5. The finger 2 is provided with a looped or bent section 6 whereby said finger will be more or less resilient, said resiliency acting to take up any slight diflerence in adjustment ot the various grippers on the rod or shaft 1,. The gripping jaw 3 is hinged or pivotally connected at 7 to the gripping jaw 8, said jaws being provided with portions adapted to snugly fit the shaft 1 when in operative position and with enlargements 9 and 10 for receiving the screw 11. This screw is preferably countersunk somewhat in the enlargement 10 and extends through said enlargement into a threaded aperture in the enlargement- 9 whereby the jaws at the upper part may be drawn tightly together to produce the proper gripping action.
By this construction and arrangement, the jaws may be loosened at any time for sliding the gripper along the bar 1 or may be loosened sufiiciently to quickly and easily remove the gripper from. the bar.
What I claim is 1. A gripper for printing presses, comprising a jaw, means for clamping said jaw on a rod, and an arc-shaped gripping finger removably secured to said jaw, said finger having a. narrow U-shaped section eXtending normal to the remaining part ot the finger for giving resilient action to the finger, said section being positioned near said jaw.
52. A gripper for printing presses, coinprising a gripping jaw formed with an areshaped section and a lateral extension. means forming a second jaw, means for hinging said jaws together, a screw member extending loosely through said second and threaded into the first mentioned jaw whereby the parts may be applied laterally to a bar at any point and then clamped rigidly to the bar, a finger, and means for removably connecting one end of said finger to said extension.
AUGUST V. WARSEN.
