UNITED STATES Israels PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN J. HYNES, OF MAPLE GROVE, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES M. DALY, OF ONEILL, NEBRASKA.
MITTEN.
Application filed July 19, 1922, Serial No. 576,068. Renewed October 27, 1924.
T 0 all whom it may cancer 21 Be it known that I, JOHN J. Hines, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maple Grove, in the county of Holt and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gloves or mittens.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a glove which is formed of rubber or rubberized fabric and provided with ventilating means for the protection and comfort of the wearer.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the ventilating means may be regulated to suit different conditions.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view looking at the back of a glove, showing the ventilator closed.
Figure 2 is a simil'ar view with the ventilator open.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line S-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 1- is a fragmentary elevation of a portion of a glove showing a modified form of ventilating means.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding p'arts, the invention is shown in connection with a glove of the type commonly known as a mitten and which includes a finger portion 10 and a wrist portion 11.
The finger portion is provided in the back of the glove with one or more openings 12, for the purpose of admitting air, as the material of which the glove is formed will be of rubber or rubberized fabric and will accordingly be impervious to air. Where more than one opening is provided, it is preferred to arrange the openings spaced as shown in the drawings and for the purpose of preventing separation of the fabric between the openings, there is provided a reinforcing strip 13. This strip acts to prevent tearing of the fabric and may occupy a position across a single opening, so that the shape of the glove will be maintained.
It is frequently desirable to cover the openings 12 and for this purpose there is provided a cover flap 14c, the latter being secured to the glove along its edge 15 adjacent the openings 12, so that when the flap is closed as shown in Figure 1, it will cover the openings. This flap may be detach'ably held in closed position by means of suitable fastening devices, such as a snap fastener, the male members of which are indicated at 16 and the female members at 17 The glove is preferably slitted upon opposite sides of the wrist portion 11 as shown at 18 and the inner ends of these slits are connected by an elastic band 19 which extends entirely around the wrist portion of the glove within the latter. The elastic band 19 acts to hold the glove snugly around the wrist and at the same time the slitted portions 18 provide ventilating openings 20 to admit air to the wrist and to both the back and palm of the hand.
In Figure l of the drawings, the glove is shown as provided with elongated openings 21 which extend transversely across the back and these openings are covered with a foraminous or screen-like cover 22, through which proper ventilation may be had.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A glove having an elongated ventilating opening in the finger portion, a reinforcing strip secured to the glove transversely of the opening, a flap having one edge secured to the glove adjacent the opening and means for detachably securing the opposite edge of the flap to the glove across the opening.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN J. HYNES.
