COMBINATION NIPPLE AND PACIFIER.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that we, HENRY A. SCHMIDT and WILLIA E. K. SoHossow, citizens of the United States, and residents of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, in the State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Nipples and Pacifiers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

The invention relates to improvements in combination nipples and pacifiers, and has for its object to provide a nipple ofthe rigid type which can be used either for a nursing-bottle or for a pacifier by means of separable fittings.

Another object of the invention is to provide a nipple which will make suction easy but still prevent the contents of the nursingbottle on which it is used from running out when the bottle is inverted.

With the above and other objects in view I the invention consists in the combination nipple and pacifier as herein claimed and all equivalents.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in different views:

Fig. 1 is an elevation, partly in section of the nipple member as used with a nursing bottle;

Fig. 2 is an elevation of the nipple member as used in a pacifier;

Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the nipple member and parts adapting it for use in a nursing-bottle; and,

Fig. 4: is an elevation of the pacifier partly in section with the nipple member removed In the drawings the numeral 5 designates the nipple member which is of the noncollapsible type and made of bone or other similar substance. The nipple member is provided with an eXteriorly-threaded stem 6 of reduced diameter, best seen in Fig. An annular shield 7 of bone or other similar material is slipped over the stem 6 and abuts against the shoulder 8 formed by the reduced stem. The head of the nipple 5 may be flattened at diametrically opposite surfaces 9 so as to simulate a collapsible nipple when in use. The nipple member is provided through the greater part of its length with an axial bore 10 of fairly large diameter communicating with a smaller bore 11 leading through the head of the nipple. This short bore of small diameter makes for an easy suction but yet is effective in preventing the contents from running out when the bottle is tipped or inverted. This construction also permits the nipple to be easily cleaned.

When the nipple member is to be used with a nursing-bottle the threaded stem 6 is screwed into a threaded opening 12 of a stopper 13 of cork, rubber or other similar material which then holds the shield 7 in place. This assembly is inserted in the neck of the nursing-bottle 14.

When the nipple member is to serve as a pacifier the threaded end 6 is screwed into a ferrule 15 of celluloid or other suitable material which is closed at the end so that when the baby sucks on the nipple he does not swallow air. The ferrule 15 may be provided with the usual ring 17.

The nipple construction will be seen to be quite simple and readily used with a nursing-bottle and as a pacifier, and has the advantage that once the baby has become accustomed thereto he will accept it readily in the form of a pacifier as well as in the form of a nursing-bottle nipple.

What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a non-collapsible nipple member having a flattened nipple portion and a longitudinal bore of relatively large diameter communicating with a short open-- ing of small diameter at the end of the nip-- ple portion, a reduced eXteriorly threaded stem at the other end thereof, an annular non-collapsible shield fitting over the stem. and a removable interiorly threaded member fitting over the stem and holding the shield in place.
