Application filed November To cZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD M. BRIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stomach Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stomach clamps and thelike, and more especially to a double clamp of that kind adapted to grip or hold two part or members at the same time. Although the invention is shown embodied in a stomach clamp such as is frequently used by surgeons in operating upon the stomach, intestines and other internal organs, for the purpose of holding these members, or the tissues surrounding them in position, it is obvious that the invention may be embodied in other forms of clamps or forceps; and that a stomach clamp embodying the features of the invention even though designed primarily for such operations as referred to above may be used in connection with opera 2 tions performed upon other parts of the body.
My improved stomach clamp isneat in appearance and may be easily and cheaply made. It is also so designed that it may be readily operated to give a double clamp as desired. It is also so constructed that it may be easily cleaned and sterilized. Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification. 1
In that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown in the draw ings, Figure 1 is a top plan View of my improved clamp showing both jaws closed, F i ure 2 is a similar view in side elevation, and Figure 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing both jaws of the clamp open.
As shown in the drawings, the clamp coinprises a center handle 10 provided with a circular finger grip 11 at one end and having its other end extended to form the center aw 12 which is formed integral therewith. The end of the handle 10 at the point where the jaw 12 commences is provided with two ears, one on each side, as indicated by 13 and 13 Pivoted to these ears, as indicated by 14: and 14, one extending to either side, are the two handles 15 and 15*. l7 indicate two jaws parallel to the center jaw 12. Each of these jaws carries pivoted to it a link as indicated by 18 and 18. These links are pivoted to the jaws 17 and 17 at 1 9 and 19", respectively, slots being formed in the jaws to accommodate the links. One of these slots is shownin Fi 2 as indicated the- links 18 and 18 operate in slots provided in the handle 10- and are held in place by pins 21 and 21 lying in the slots 16 and 16 respectively. The lower end of each of the handles-15 and 15 is bifurcated, the links 18 and 18 lying between the prongs. The upper end of each of the jaws 17 and 17 is also bifurcated as indicated by 22 and 22*, respectively, and the handles 15 and 15 are provided with the pins 23 and 23 operatingin the slots thus formed. The handles 15 and 15 are pivoted to the links 18 and 18 at 24.- and 2A.
The jaws 17, 12 and 17 are parallel and each slightly curved as shown in Fig. 2.
The following means are provided for holding either of the jaws tightly clamped. Pivoted to the handle 10, one on either side, at 30 and 30 respectively, are the two slightly curved screws 31 and 31. Threaded on each of these is a thumb nut 32, 32 The screws 31 and 31 may be swung around until they lie in the slots 34, 34* provided on the handles 15, 15 so that either of the thumb nuts 32 or 32 may be tightened up to hold its respective clamp.
While I have shown and described certain by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described comprising; a stationary handle provided with a pairof slots therein a stationary jaw attached. to the stationary handle; two movable handles pivoted to the stationary handle; a pin in each movable handle; a movable,
jaw arranged in conjunctionwith each of the movable handles, each of said movablejaws provided with a slot in the end thereof coacting with the pin in the corresponding Changes, therefore, in the conmovable handle; and a pair of links, each link being pivoted at its center to one of the movable handles and having one end pivoted. to the corresponding movable jaw and the other end provided with a pin operating in one of the slots in the stationary handle.
2. A device of the character doserihet comprising; a stationary handle; stationary aw attached to the stationary handle; two movable handles pivoted to the stationary handle; a movable aw arranged in conjunction with each of the movable han dles; and a pivoted link connection betwee each of the movable jaws and the corresponding movable handle and the stationary handle whereby movement of the movable handle toward the stationary handle will cause the corresponding movable to move toward the stationary jaw.
3. A deviee of the character described comprising; a stationary handle; a stationary jaw attached to the stationary handle; two movable handles pivoted to the stationary handle; a movable aw arranged in conjunction with each of the movable handles and parallel to the stationary jaw; and a pivoted link connection between each o1 the movable jaws and the corresponding movable handle and the stationary handle whereby movement of the movable handle toward the stationary handle will cause the corresponding movable jaw to move toward the stationary jaw while maintaining its parallel relation thereto.
