JOHN s. yCU'rmann'isort or MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
Application mea may 23,
Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1nv Closures for Recep-l tacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
`This invention relates to closures or stoppers for receptacles, the main object of the invention being to provide a simple, inex pensive and efficient means of closing and sealing the orifice of a hot water bottle or the like.
The invention consists essentially in providing a metal tube or sleeve adapted to fit into the neck of a hot water bottle, and a fabric covered rubber stopper fitting into the tube, and provided with means whereby the stopper may be expanded to seal the tube or may be contracted to withdraw the stopper from the tube as desired.
In the drawings which illust-rate my inventionz- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the stopper fitted into a bottle neck. l
Figure 2 is a vertical elevation of the same.
'Figure 3 is a plan view.
Referring to the drawings, lOdesignates a hot water bottle or the like, usually made of rubber, and into the neck of this bottle is fitted a metal tube or sleeve 11. The sleeve is bell mouthed at the bottom as indicated at 11a, and the rubber neck of the bottle is drawn over thesleeve and sealed by any suitable means. The sleeve 11 is provided at the top with a flange 12 of larger diameter than the bottle neck, and the upper surface of the flange is provided with aprojecting pin or boss 13. The stopper which is adapted to co-act with the metal sleeve 11 is made as follows :-A lower compression member comprising a circular flange 16 and carrying a threaded spindle 17 co-operates with an upper compression member or washer 14, apertured to receive the threaded spindle 17. Between the plates 14 and 16 I provide an elastic stopper 20 of rubber or the like. This stopper is apertured lon itudinally as indicated at 21 to fit over t e s indle 17. The rubber stopper is also rovided with an exterior covering 22 of fa ric, l
to prevent deterioration or vulcanizing of the rubber by excessive heat. The lower 19'22. serial No. 563.098.
compression member 16 is slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the stopper,
and the Vupper compression member 14 1s provided with a circumferential V.slot 15` adapted' to co-operate vwith the projection 13 on the upper surface of the flange 12. Al
threaded nut 18 fof ring formor anyother suitable shapeis threadedon to the upper end of the spindle 17, the'lower face 19 of the nutl fitting down upon the upper surface ofthe washer 14. When the nut is screwed' on to the spindle the upper end of the latter may be slightly enlarged to prevent the nut from coming off.
When the stopper is inserted into the sleeve and the plate 14 is forced down on the flange 12, the circumferential slot 15 is fitted over the projecting pin 13. By turning the nut the plates 14 and 16 are forced together and the stopper is prevented from turning in the sleeve by means of the projection 13 acting against the edges of the plate 14 in the slot 15. As the stopper is prevented from turning within the sleeve the plates 14 and 16 may be drawn together, thus expanding the rubber stopper within the neck 11 and thereby tightly sealing the orifice. To release the stopper, opposite direction, the plate 14 rotating until the opposite edge of the slot 15 is forced against the projection 13. As the plates 14 and 16 recede from each other the stopper is contractedy circumferentially and may be easily withdrawn from the neck of the bottle. l* l Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A closure for bottles comprising a flanged sleeve adapted to be fitted within the neck of a bottle, and a stopper comprising an upper compression plate resting on the flange of said sleeve, interengaging mea-ns carried by .the flange plate for holding the latter against turning movement, a lower compression plate, a rubber closure member mounted between said plates, and means for moving said plates toward or away from each other to circumferentially expand or contract the rubber closure member.
-. 2. A closure for bottles comprising a the nut is turned in the flanged sleeve adapted' to be fitted into the neck of a bottle, a projection on the flange the first compression plate, affr'iibber stopper mounted on said spindle, and.'Y means for moving said plates toward or away from Yeach other tocircnmferentially 4expand or contract the rnbber stopper.
3 In combination, a bottle composed Wholly Y i of elastic material, such as rubber, ametallic Vsleeve litted in the neck of said `bottleand having its upper and lower ends turned outwardly, 'the outwardly turned'portiin at the iipper end o1 the sleeve being formed to provide a'relatively ivide and horizontally disposed Vflange overlying the ripper the male neck' and l stepper ebmpnsmg n elastic element fexpans'iblz vinto' lrict'ionalY gripping engagement ivithl the vinneijii'a'll-'-of said sleeve, ipper` and lower v c'c'ni'prssion plates engaging the top and bottom: portions of said elastic feleiiient, said ripper platefb- :my hand.
ingfof'snflicientidianieter to rest Yupon the 20 aforementionedflange and being provided With a slot adapted to receive a projection on the flange and` means-:for moving said compression plates relatively to one another including YaA threaded stem'carried by the 25 lthenecki'ofsaid bottle and a'stopper ,capable V o fpeg'ipansion and contraction to engageal'id dieengagethe inner Wall of saidfslereve."
In ltnes's whereof, I have hereunto set Joijnvjs; CUrHBERTeoN. t
