To all whom it may concern:

Be it knownthat I, VERNON A. Commm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ocean Grove, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mailing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to mailing devices and was primarily designed for use with registered mail. I

It has been found that in forwarding registered mail, if no means is provided in conjunction with the registered mail for aeknowled g the receipt of the same, the

receiver 0 n neglects to acknowledge its receipt. Such neglect often causes great inconvenience and unnecessary worry over the delivery of registered mail.

The general object of this invention is the provision of a cheap and sim le mailing device for containing registered mail, provided with a return card which may be readily detached on the receipt of the registered mail and delivered to the letter carrier. This object is accomplished by utilizing an envelope provided with a closing flap on i which a card-receiving pocket may be mounted, forming a weakened line in the envelope flap across the mouth of said cardreceiving pocket, cuttin in the envelope flap adjacent the weakens line openings for allowing the gripping and withdrawal of a card mounted in the card-receiving ocket when the envelope is slit along the wee ened line, and providing adhesive on the inner face of the envelope for closing the pocket to prevent the removal of a' card mounted therein when the envelope is sealed.

This and other objects of the invention will'be more clearly understood from the following detailed description and accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of one type of envelope that might be used in constructin the mailing device;

Referring to the above-mentioned drawngs, an envilgge 10 of any ordinary type, including a y'portion 11 and a closing flap 12, is shown.- Mounted on the inner face of the flap 12 is a pocket 13. This pocket consists of. av rectangular sheet of paper 14 attached to the inner face of the envelope flap by means of an adhesive, as shown at 19. A weakened line 15 extending across the mouth of, the ket 13 is formed in the envelope flap"; "s weakened line may be formed by makin a line of perforations in the envelo e flap. A card 18, similar to the one s own in Fi re 5, is mounted in the pocket 13. In or er to provide access "to the card for grip ing it to withdraw it a portion of the enve ope is cut away, as shown at 16, exposing the edge of the card 18. A portion of the rectangular sheet of paper 14 attached to the envelope flap to form 'a pocket is'cut away at 17 so that the card 18 may be easily gripped without gripping the sheet of paper 14. Adhesive, as shown at-20, is rovided on the inner face of the envelope ap so that when the envelope is sealed the mouth of the ket 13 is closed, preventing the removal of the card 18 from the ocket.

In using a mailing device of this ty e, a return card 18 provided with a space ihr the address and a space for the signature of the receiver,'stamped and ready for mailing, is mounted in the pocket 13. The mail to be registered is contained in the envelope body 11. When the envelope is sealed the adhesive shown at 20 on the inner face of the fla attaches the envelope flap to the body 0 the envelope so as to close the pocket 13. When the registered mail is received the receiver slits the envelope flap along the weakened line 15 and withdraws the card 18, which he signs and returns to the letter carrier. A device of this type would eliminate the necessity of the mail carrier carrying a receipt to be signed by the receiver. In this way the work of preparing receipts .to be signed by the receivers of registered mail would be eliminated, cutting down the work of the plostofiice staff. It would also make it poss1 1e for those receiving registered letters to immediately reply, acknowled g the receipt of the same.
