J. SOSS Feb. 19 -1Z4.
HINGE Filed Nov. 2l. 1921 Patentedli'eb. 19, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SOSS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HINGE.
Application led November 21,1921. Serial No. 516,593.
To all whom t may concern.' l
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of -New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of
which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hin and articularly to what are known as invisible inges, and the object of the invention is to provide as improved butt construction for hinges of this class lwhereby the attachment of the hinge butts to a door or swinging member and door frame or stationary support may be materially simplied as wel as the proper alining or mounting of a door or swinging member in a door frame or support; and with this and other objects inl view the invention consists in a hinge of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation andeiiicient-in use.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters l.in each of the views, andy in which Fi 1 is a partial side View of a door and oor frame showing my improved lock construction mounted therein with part of the construction broken away and in section;
Fig. 2 a side edge view of a door frame with the door in an open position and showing my improved hinge mounted in connection therewith and in an extended position' Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3- 3 of Fig. 2
Fig.,4 aiartial section on the line 4--4 of Fig. 1; an
Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 5 5 of Fi 3. l 1
lgn the drawings I have indicated at 10 a part of a door frame or other stationaryv support, and at 11 a part of a door or swinging member, and my improved hinge c on- 1 struction12 is adapted to be mounted in connection with the door frame 10 and'door 11 as. hereinafter set out. I
-The-hinge 12 comprises two cylindrical vpassed into holes 1 5 and 16 drilled in the adjacent side faces of the door frame 10 and door 11, and said cylindrical hinge butts are held in other attaching devices 17 passed angularly through the opposite sides of the butts 13 and 14 and into the door 10 and door frame 11, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 of the drawings.
Each of the hinge butts 13 and 14 are provided with apertures 18 which extend ongitudiiially through the butts, and the top and bottom walls of said apertures are provided with elongated grooves or recesses 19, and pivotally mounted within the apertures 18 of the hinge butts 13 and 14 as shown at 20 are links 21 and-22, the links 21 being pivoted within the butt 14, and in the construction shown two links 21 are position by nails, screws or employed and two links 22, but it will be pin 25 is passed through the liiiks 21-22 where the arms 23 and 24 join, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, and the arms 24 of the links 21 and 22 are provided with offset portions 26 through which pins 27 pass, said pins extend beyond said links into the groove or recesses 19 in which they are adapted to operate to guide the movement of the links 21 and 22. A
The pivot pins at 20 in the separate links are preferably of the construction shown in detail in Fig. 5 of the drawings, said pivot pins being headed at one end as shown at 28 and provided at theother end with hookshaped lingers 29 which rest in recessed portions in the outer faces of the hinge butts 13 and 14, and said hook-shaped portions serve to retain the pins in proper position as well as to reinforce and strengthen the same as well as the bodyr of the hinge butts. I It will be noted that the distinctive feature of the invention consists in providing hinge butts, the outer faces of which, or the general form of which, 'are similar or clearly which were either chiseled into the door and door frame or machined therein, or stamped or molded therein, depending upon the material of which the door and door frame was constructed, but in all such cases the diiiculty arises in the proper formation of the recesses to receive the hinge buttsas well as the proper alinement of the door by locating or forming said recesses properly, but with my improved construction all that is necessary is to fix upon the door and door frame a center ,and to drill, bore or otherwise form a cylindrical hole therein,
the axis or center of which will be regulated by said centers, and while I have shown in the accompanying drawings hinge butts which are composed of solid material or metal and are fashioned to the desired form b machining, die-casting or otherwise. t will be understood that said hinge butts may be formed in any desired manner and it must be also borne in mind that am not necessarily limited to the specific form, construction and arrangement of the invisible hinge elements of the hinge herein shown and described, namely, the links 21 and 22, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction may be made, Within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of m invention or sacrificing its advantages.
aving fully described my invention,

2. An invisible hinge of the class described comprising movably connected hinge butts, said hinge butts being cylindrical in form whereby they may be mounted in holes or recesses of similar form in a stationary support and swinging member.
3. An invisible hinge of the class described comprising movably connected hinge butts, said hinge butts being cylindrical in form whereby they may be mounted in holes or recesses of similar form .in a stationary support and swinging member, and means for securing said hinge butts in their supports.
4. An invisible hinge of the class described, oomprising cylindrical hinge butts adapted to be mounted in correspondingly -formed bores or recesses in a stationary supbutts when the swinging member is in its closed position.
5. An invisible hinge of the class described, comprising cylindrical hinge butts adapted to be mounted in correspondingly formed bores or'recesses in a stationary support and swin ing member, hinge elements connecting said hinge butts and adapted to be contained within said hinge butts when the swinging member is in its closed position, and means passed through said hinge butts and into thev stationary support and swinging member for securing said hinge butts in position. 6. An invisible hinge of the class described for mounting a swinging member and stationary support, said swinging member and stationary support being provided with cylindrical bores or recesses, the hinge bein provided with butts of approximately cyn rical form and adapted to be placed in the bores or recesses of said stationai? support and swinging member, means or securing said hinge butts in position, and hinge elements mounted in connection with the separate hinge butts for connecting the same with one another. l v
7. An invisible hinge of the class described comprising butts of approximately cylindrical formation and provided with apertures, links pivotally mounted in connection with said butts and movable in the. apertures thereof, said links being pivoted' together, and means for guidiny the links pivoted to one hinge butt in t e other of said hinge butts.
8. An invisible hingeof the class described comprising butts of approximatel cylindrical formation and provided apertures, links ivotally mounted in connection with sai butts and movable in the apertures thereof, said links being ivoted together, means for guidin the' lin, pivoted to one hinge butt in te other of said hinge butts, and means whereby said hinge butts may be mounted in connection with suitable supports.
9. An invisible hinge of the class described comprising butts of approximately cylindrical formation and provided with apertures, links pivotally mQllnted in connection with said butts and movable in the apertures thereof, said .links being substantially L-shaped in form and being pivoted together, and means for guiding the free lend portions of said links in the separate butts of the hinge.
10. An invisible hinge of the class described comprising butts of approximately cylindrical formation and provided with apertures, links pivotally mounted in GQ11- -nection with said butts and movable in the apertures thereof, said links being substantially L-shaped in form and being pivoted together, the Walls of the apertures of said hinge butts being provided with grooves, and pins passed throu h the free end p ortions of said links an adapted to operate v in said grooves for guiding said links in said hinge butts.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 10 as my invention I have signed my name this 18th day of November, 1921.
