Description

Dec. 11 H923. 1,477,355-
E. 1... JACOBS WRENCH Filed April 13. 1922 H a gnvenl'oz Patented Dec. ll, @9235.
EVELYN LEQN JJlCGES, -61 HENRYE"TA, OKLAHOMA.
WRENCH.
Application filed April 13, Serial No. 552,130.
1 0 whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EvnLYN L. el A0088, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henryetta, in the county of Olnnulgee and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates specifically to a tank wrench for use in the oil field when constructing bolted steel tanks.
The invention has for its object the pro vision of a wrench which will enable'the work to be effected more conveniently, in less time and with the expenditure of a. minimum amount of energy.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench. embodying the invention, parts being broken away,
Figure 2 is a'sectionai detail on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional detail on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates a crank brace of ordinary form provided at one end with a swivel head 2 and having spaced ears 3 at its opposite end. The numeral l designates a rod or bar havin a socket 5 detachably fitted to one end and having a fork 6 at its opposite end corresponding to the spaced ears 3 of the crank brace 1. A block 7 of etrical form is fitted between the ears 3 and furcations 6 of the fork and is pivotally connected thereto by means of screws or pins 8 detachably fitted to the parts Sand 6, whereby the block 7 may be removed at will. The openings, formed in the sides of the block 7 to receive the inner ends of the elements 8, extend into the block a short dis tance only and do not pass therethrough, hence the block is not unnecessarily weakened and the elements 8 may lie in the same plane without interfering with one another. The elements 8 are threaded into the parts 3 and 6, whereby they are positively connected therewith and are capable of being readily removed when required. The sides of the block 7 are of rounded form, whereby provision is had for a freedom of movement and maximum strength and durability.
A "IT-fitting 9 is slidable on the rod or bar a l and an expansible helical spring 10,1nounted on the part a and confined between the parts 5 and 9, normally tends to hold the fitting 9 at the limitiof its upward movement on the part at. A sleeve 11, provided with an ofiset shank 12, is connected with the lateral nipple of the T-fitting 9by having the shank 12 threaded therein, a clamp screw 13 securing the sleeve in the required adjusted position. A rod or bar 1 1 is adjustable in the sleeve 11 and is secured in the adjusted position by means of a clamp screw 15 mounted in a threaded opening formed in a side of the sleeve. The lower end of the rod or bar 141 is bent laterally, as indicated at 16, and is threaded to receive a socket l? which is secured by means of a clamp screw 18. The sockets 5 and 17 are detachable and may be replaced by other sockets of diilerent form. and size. A clamp screw 19, threaded into a side of the socket 5, secures the latter upon the rod or bar 4.
In the operation of the brace, the bolt and nut are held between the sockets 5 and 17 and the crank brace may be adjusted to any u eral adjustment thereof, a sleeve slidablj erating means for the rod disposed above 10 adjustable along said bar and provided with said fitting. a shank, a fitting into Which said, shank ex: In testimony whereof I affix my signature tends,,m'eanstoextensibly secure said shank in presence of two Witnesses. v
and said fitting together for adjustment to correspond to the position of said socket, a EVELYN LEON JACOBS 7 rod parallel to said bar and slidab-le'in said 7 Witnesses:
fitting, a socket carried by said rod to co-act D. E. AsHMoRE, with they first mentioned socket and an op p S. W AsHMoRE.
