UNITED STATES PATENT O'rEIcE.A N
MOSES J. KAUFFMANN, OF ARCOLA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDMILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,647, dated February 17, 1874; application filed December 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MosEs J. KAUFFMANN, of Arcola, in the county of Douglas and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the Letters Patent No. 142,47 9, granted to me September 2, 1873; and it consists in the construction of the fans of the windwheel.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, lI will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my windmill with theV present improvements. Fig. 2- is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is perspec tive view of one of the governor-fans.
A represents the horizontal shaft, to the outer end of which the wind-wheel is attached, and upon which shaft are the devices for turning the fans of the wind-wheel, the same as described in my patent above referred to. B is the lever, the inner end of which is connected with said devices, and the outer end of which had, in my former patent, a weight suspended from it to bring 'the fans of the wind-wheel in the wind again.
In the present case I dispense with this weight, and employ in lieu thereof a ball-governor constructed in the following manner: O represents a vertical shaft, upon which are secured two miter-wheels, a and b. At the upper end of the shaft O are pivoted the two arms d d, with balls E E at their outer ends, and said arms are, by rods e c, connected with a iianged sleeve or collar, f, sliding upon the shaft C. In place of the crank upon the inner end of the shaft A is attached a miterwheel, a.- The governorshaft C is passed down along the post of the windmill until the miter-wheel a reaches to and gears with the miter-Wheel a on the wind-wheel shaft A. The outer end of the lever B is made forked to straddle the collar or sleeve j', so that the rising .and falling of the governor-arms will change the position of the fans of the wind-wheel. By this means a more even and uniform speed is obtainedit matters not whether the wind be..high or low. Each fan on the wind-wheel is made of three blades, D D, connected by means of arms 7L la, and set as shown in Fig. l, to overlap each other, and their inner ends closer together than their outer ends. By this means increased surface is obtained for the wind to act against, and the fans are easier turned than if the fan were all in one piece of the same area. G G represent the governor.- fans arranged upon pivoted arms m m, substantially in the same manner and for the same purpose as described in my former patent, and each arm is provided with a spring, a, to draw the governor-fan forward. Each fan G is provided with a loop, p, through which is passed the shank s of a wing, G', which can thus be moved out and in, as desired, to increase or diminish the surface of the fan against which the wind is to act.
Y Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fan for wind-wheels, composed of three blades, DI), set as described, and connected by arms h h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
` In testimony that I claim the foregoing I Ihave hereunto set my hand this -Sth day of November, 1873.
MOSES J. KAUFFMANN.
