Be it known that l, FREDERIC J. PLoNDKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in an Operating Bed, of which the following is a specification.

@ne object of my invention is to provide a bed of such construction that it can inot only be eiliciently used for an operating table, but will also at other times present a neat and attractive appearancek in the patients room.

An incidental object is to provide improved means for removing the head and toot 0f the bed when an operat-ion is to be performed. Y

Another object is to provide improved means for narrowing the bed so the surgeon may work to better advantage on the patient lying on the bed. v

With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are hereinafter describedl with reference to t-he drawings which accompany and form a part of this speciication. v

in the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved bed as it would ordinarily appear in a patients room. Figure 2 is a similar view but with the head, foot and one-half of the bed lowered, so as to bring it into position for an operation on the patient occupying the bed. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bed in itsvoper-ating position with a mattress carried by the springs and showing the manner in which the mattress folds down out of the surgeons way. Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 4 4, Figure 1. Figure V5 is a. section taken on the line 5 5, Figure 4. Figure 6 is an enlarged detail of one of the head posts of the bed, and Figure 7 is a view taken at right angles to that shown in Figure 6. y The bed consists essentially of a head 1 and foot 2 connected by a Xed rail 3, a centrally supported rail 4 and a detachable rail 5, which carry thereon 'the spring frame 6 vfhich is hinged near the center thereof at The removable rail 5 has an aperture 8 ateach end thereof itted over dowels 9 carried by the head rand foot members 1 and 2 as shown in Figures 1 and 4.

When this rail is removed the yspring frame drops `down in the manner clearly shown in Figure 2, thereby transforming the bed as shown in Figure 1 into a narrow operating table as shown in Figure 2.

The head and foot members are of similar construction and each comprises a'lower rigid portion having the two posts 9 and V10r4 suitably connected by pipes or rods 11 and 12 and angle header 13 which supports one end ot the bed spring frame.

The lower ends of theposts 9 and 10 have slidahly mounted therein rods 14 and 15 respectively mounted on anti-friction rollers 16 and 17, pins 1S passing throughapertures in posts 9 and 10 and rods 14 and 15, provide means for raising or lowering the hed.

The xupper ends of the posts are hollow as is better shown in Figures 6 and A7 and are adapted to receive plugs 19, Figures 6 and 2, in a snug lit so the upper portions 20 and 21 of the head and foot respectively may be similarly mounted in their respective lower portions.

.Flach of the plugs 19 has hinged thereto a link 22 which in turn has hinged thereto a loop 23, the opposite end of which encircle the pin 24 passing through the post.

It will be apparent that with vthis construction when the bed is in theV position shown in Figure 1 the head or foot may be lifted up so the plugs -19 are drawn clear of their respective posts and then swung downwardly into the position shown in Figure 2.

The bed is preferably provided with a mattress such as 25, Figure 3, and hooks 26 are provided to engage in apertures 27 so the mattress will not spread at its hinge line when it is flat on the bed.

It is apparent that with this construction and with the mattress hooked together, a bed is provided that will be not only comfort-able in every respect for the patient, but will also be sightly in appearance, and yet incase -a patient is in a condition where it would be dangerous to move him to theoperating room, the bed may be quickly changed into an operating table of such size and shape and have such adjustments for height that the surgeon in charge may performthe necessary operation with practically as much ease and precision as if the patient were in the operating room and. on an operating table.
