MATTRESS.
Applicationfiled February 24, 1922. Serial No. 538,839,.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, SARAH J. WIGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lonerock, in the county of Gilliam and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Mattress; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a mattress which when not in use may be folded or rolled to compact form for storage and which particularly may be rolled or folded tofacilitate the moving thereof and wherein the shifting of the filler so as to unbalance the mattress maybe prevented by,
the arrangement of the filler in a plurality of compartments or pockets of the casing, said compartments or pockets being respectively accessible interiorly to rearrange the filler in the event of the disarrangement or packing thereof; and furthermore to provide a mattress havingin connection there with a pillow and cover or sham construction formed as a part thereof; and with this object in View the invention consists in a construction, combination and relation of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a mattress embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same taken on a vertical plane,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2 showing one of the compartments or pockets open as when introducing the filler thereinto.
Figure 4 is an end view of the device showing it in the rolled. or folded posi' tion.
The mattress consists essentially of a base or bottom sheet 10 carrying parallel longitudinal series of pockets'or compartments ll of substantially rectangular form with their inner ends open until the filler 12 has been introduced thereinto whereupon the edges of the inner walls of the compartment may be stitched to the bottom or base sheet. Each pocket in addition to the ortion of the base or bottom sheet whic it covers consists of the upper fold 13, the end walls 14 and the outer and inner side walls 15 and 16, the several walls being stitched to the base or bottom sheet with the exception of the inner side walls of which the lower edges are voriginally left free to permit of the insertion of the filler 12. After the compartments or pockets have been filled the lower edges of the inner side walls may be secured to the base or bottom sheet by stitching indicated at 18.
Connected with one end of the base or bottom sheet which in reference to its position onthe bed maybe referred to as the "upper or head end are the main pillow pockets'19, and the supplemental pillow pockets 20, both of which areleft open at their inner sides adjacent to the stitch line 21, to permit of the introduction of the fillers 22 and 23-and also connected with the upper or head end of the base orbottom sheet, adjacent to the stitch line 21 are the pillow covers or shams 24 adapted to fold over the pillows and preferably having drop flanges or valances 25 to cover the side edges or surfaces of the pillow compartments or pockets. It will be understood that either or both of the main and supplemental pockets may be employed, and if only one is used, the supplemental pocket may be arranged in the main pocket and the main pockets may be provided with a filler making the upper surfaces thereof on a plane with the upper surfaces of the compartments or pockets of the body portion of the mattress, so that the'completed structure may have the general appearance of an ordinary mattress without the pillow feature.
Obviously any suitable material such as feathers, wool, hair or any equivalent may be employed as the filling material, and owing to the rectangular form of the com- I partments or pockets they are adapted to present a substantially unbroken surface whenarra-nged uppermost, although if preferred the mattress may be reversed to 7 present the bottom or base sheet uppermost to formthe surface to support the occupant of the bed. I V
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is e A mattress having a base or bottom sheet consisting of a single sheet of material, parallel series of compartments supported by said sheet, each of said compartments having their longitudinal edges arranged transversely of the bottom or base sheet and ex- In testimony whereof I atfix my signature tending from the longitudinal edges thereof in presence of two Witnesses. inward to the lon itudinal central axis thereof, said compartments having origi-, SARAH WIOK' 5 nally open oppositely facing inner ends to Witnesses:
