May I, 1923.
S. BENENATO ENVELOPE Filed Nov. l5 1921 Patented ay 1, 192a.-
STELLA BENENATO, OF PHOENIX, ARIZONA.
ENVELOPE.
Application filed November 15, 1921. Serial No. 515,360.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, STELLA BENENATO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenix, Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes,- of which the following is a specification.
The present invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as paper receptacles and more particularly relates to an improvement in envelopes.
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide means for temporarily connecting a plurality of series of envelopes in overlapping elation to enable the operator of a typewriter to address the envelopes in a minimum number of arm and hand movements, the overlapping arrangement insuringof the accurate feeding of the envelopes to and through the machine and in addition preventing accidental breaking of the connecting means and the consequent separation of the envelopes.
- As an additional and equally important object the invention embraces the provision of means for connecting the envelopes in overlapping relation with the top flaps extended so that the gummed portions may be subsequently dampened and sealed and also stamped before the envelopes are separated.
Briefly, the invention may be said to consist in the arrangement of a series of envelopes, each with the top flaps extended, positioned in overlapping relation and removably secured together by perforated and ummed hinge-like elements, of paper or the fike, one leaf of each element being secured to the back of one envelope while the other leaf of the same element is secured to the outer face of the extended top flap of the adjacent envelope.
Other objects, as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
, The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fi re 1 is a front elevation of a series of enve opes connected together in accordance with this inventions Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 33 of Figure 2, showing particularly the hinge-like connecting elements with relation to the envelopes in accordance with one form of the invention. I
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective detail of two envelopes withthe top flap of one turned down to show the position of-the connecting elements, and
Fig. 5 is a similar view of another method of connection.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts. i
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings there is employed a series 'of envelopes 1 arranged in overlapping relation as shown at 2 with the top flaps 3 extended, the envelopes being temporarily or detachably connected together in .such manner by hinge-like elements generally designated 4. Each element 4 is formed from paper or the like and is perforated as at 5 providing leaves 6 and 7, gummed for connection with adjacent envelopes. As shown in Figures 1 to 4 two of such elements 4 are employed for securing together adjacent envelopes near their side edges. Each of these elements have one leaf secured to the outer'face of the back of one envelope near one side edge and the other leaf secured to the outer face of the top flap of the adjacent envelope near the corresponding edge.
In Figure 5 wherein the numerals are primed only one element is employed for securing the adjacent envelopes in overlappin relation such being positioned medially of t e edges of the back of one of the envelopes, and medially of the side but at the inner edge of the top flap of the adjacent envelope.
In using a series of the envelopes such as five or ten, it is only necessary to insert the first or outermost in the machine, the overlapping features facilitating the continuous movement of the series therethrough. By having only the addressing space visible no unnecessary or long period is lost in arranging the addressing space of the following envelope in position to be typed, in fact, the typing is almost uninterrupted, thus in addition to saving arm movement, considerable time is saved. Moreover, quite a number may be connected in series without being cumbersome or unwieldly.
It is believed in view of the foregoing deparent,
What is claimed and desired to be secured 4 by Letters-Patent is:
l. The combination with a series of mailable articles each including a substantially fiat and rectangular body portion having an address receiving surface of means for temporarily securing the articles together so that the body portions thereof overlap each other and leave the lower portions of the address receiving surfaces exposed. V
2. The combination with a series of envelopes each having the top flap thereof gumined and extended upwardly from the body portion, of means for temporarily fastening the body portions of the envelopes in overlapping relation so as to leave the lower portions of the outer faces of the envelopes exposed,
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
STELLA BENENATO.
