JOSEPH RICHARD PURVIS AND GEORGE HENRY MOSES, OF TODMORDEN, ONTAfiIO, CANADA.
COMBINED TAIL LIGHT AND LICENSE-MARKER HOLDER.
Application filed October 3, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOSEPH RICHARD Punvls and GEORGE HENRY MosEs, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, and both residents of the village of Todmorden, in
the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tail Lights and License-Marker Holders, of
which the following is the specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in combined tail light and license marker holders and the object of the invention is to construct a simple and effective device in which the numbers on the marker while being clearly visible by day will be capable of being illuminated by night, said license number plates being constructed of translucent material.
A further object is to provide means for supporting the marker plate in position in the holder and a still further object is to devise a holder that will be dust and water-.
tight.
Our invention consists of a combined tail light and license marker holder constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of the device constructed according to our invcntion.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the inside of the back portion thereof with the front removed.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of the means for securing the marker plate in position in 1 the holder. Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
1 is the front of the holder provided with a suitable window 2 of sufficient size to expose the figures on the marker plate 3, said marker plate being constructed of translucent material such as celluloid, such celluloid plate can be constructed of very thin material and will consequently be more or less flexible and accordingly aback plate 4 of heavier translucent material is provided.
5 is a marker plate holding frame of substantially the shape of the front of the easing and adapted to be inserted thereinto Serial No. 505,141.
behind the marker plate and the back plate fl, said frame having a groove 6 surrounding the central window 7 in such frame. 8 is a rearwardly extending peripheral flange on the frame. 9 is a circular orifice in the upper portion of the frame adapted to register with the corresponding orifice 10 in the upper portion of the front of the casing 1 over which a boss 11 extends provided with the tail lamp bulls'eye 12.
13 is the back of the casing provided with a forwardly extending flange 14: adapted to be inserted into the front of the casing and to engage the rearwardly extending flange 8 of the marker holding frame. 15 are bolts extending through the front, frame and back and provided with suitable nuts 16 for securing the respective parts-of the casing in position. 17 is a suitably curved reflector provided with the arc-shaped ribs 18 for de fleeting the rays of the light from the light 19 onto the rear face of the marker plate .for illuminating the same.
In assembling the different parts of the device the marker plate 3 is first inserted behind the window 2 in the front of the casing and the backing late placed behind such marking plate. 'Fhe frame 5 is then inserted into the casing front behind the backing and the marking plates and such plates are then centered so that they fit into the groove 6 in such frame. The back of the casing 13, to which is secured the reflector 17, is then applied to the front of the casing by inserting the flange 14 into the same. en this is done the forward edge of such flange 14 engages the flange 8 of the frame, thus pressing the same firmly against the backing plate and holding the marking plate and backing plate in the centered position.
When the light 19 is turned on it will be seen that the downward rays of the light will be deflected by 'the reflector 17 onto the rear face of the marker plate, thus illuminating the same. The light 19 will also illuminate the tail lamp bulls eye 12.
From the above description it Will be apparent that we have devised a combined tail lamp and license marker holder in which the numbers on the marker plate will be visible by day or by night. Further we have devised a holder in which there will be no rattling of the respective parts and in which the marker plate can be constructed of very light material and thus can be renewed at a very small cost each year.
What we claim as our invention is.
