To all 'whom it may concern.' u K Be it known that. l, KURT ``WANDEL, a citizen of Wurttemberg, whe have declared my intention/of becoming a' citizen k,of the United States, and resident of New York city, county of New lYorkystate of New York, have invented' an Improvement in Paper-Crinkling Mechanism, of which `the, following description, ink connection with the accompanying drawings, is'a specication2 like characters von the drawings representlng like parts in each of thev several vlews. l
This invention relates to the crinkling of ypaper to render the same' stretchable and more particularly to paper crinkling mecha+ nism employing air pressure to cause the paper to adhere to the crinkling drum for engagement and clearance therefrom by 'a' doctor or abutment which causesk the crinkling in the paper. In accordance with' a practice recently developed `by me, this air pressure is atmospheric'pressure which is made available by the use of a suction device associated with the crinkling drum. In a preferred form of apparatus: of this kind the crinkling druml is grcoved circumferentially at intervals throughout its op'- erative length providing a Aseries. of continuous paper supporting areas which alternate with such grooves and with such groovesconstituting suction areas to hold the .paper continuously adherent to the drum. I have found' that in the usek of air suction means to cause adherence of the paper to `the crinkling drum, most satisfactory and `eective results are obtained by having the suction eii'ect'gradually in-k of the drum and to permitthis the paper" web is caused to engage the drum at a substantial angular distance in advance of the doctor. Paper crinkling apparatus comprising a crinkling drum and doctor cooperative therewith, and a suction box mounted in terior of the drum in proximity to said doctor, said drum having perforations therethrough to connect with said suction box and a packing extending angularly in terior of the drum backward from said su@` tion box to close certain of such perforar tions.

Paper crinkling apparatus comprising a crinkling drum having its operative surface formed with a series of ciroumerentiat groovesalternating with continuous pape' supporting areas, a doctor mounted to ce operate with said drum, and means for prof. ducingy a suction elfect in said grooves of a maximum degree in l proximity to the crinkling point and gradually decreasing backward therefrom.
