FREDERICK J'. BOSSE, 0F NORRISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADHESIVE TAPE.
Application filed .Tuly 7, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FREDERICK J. Bosse, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State oPennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adhesive Tape, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates broadly to fiexible tapes, and more particularly to tapes having adhesive properties.
The object of my invention is to provide a tape in which maximum adhesive effect is secured for a minimum of adhesive surface in contact.
A further object of my invention is to provide means in a tape whereby the combined effect of an adhesive coating and pneumatic pressure produces a resultant adhesive effort.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a tape with a plurality of resilient vacuum cup gripping members.
The drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification illustrate certain embodiments of my invention, although it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such particular embodiments, inasmuch as many modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In the drawings,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tape showing the vacuum cups distributed over the area thereof.
Figure Q is a sectional view of the tape illustrated in Fig. l.
Figure f3 is a perspective view of the tape showing the vacuum cups arranged in a particular order.
Figures 4 and 5 are sectional views of modified forms of my invention.
Referring now more particularly to Figure l of the drawings, reference character l designates the tape manufactured of Hexible material impervious to air. Formed in the body portion of the tape are raised sections 3 and 4 which constitute resilient vacuum cups. These members form spaces in the active contact surface of the tape as shown in the sectional view, Figure 2, leav- Serial No. 394,561.
ing the actual contactingr surface indicated by 10. This surface may be coated on the under side with a suitable adhesive, or where the tape is used for medicinal and surgical purposes the surface is medicinally treated.
In Figure 8 a perspective view of the tape is shown wherein the vacuum cups are arranged in staggered relationship such that in applying the tape to a surface the cups in alternate rows become aligned with the surface simultaneously.
Figure 4 shows a construction of tape wherein a separate strip 5 is arranged ad- ]acent the under side of the tape 1 containing the resilient vacuum cups 3 and 4. This strip is suitably perforated to conform with the outlets of the vacuum cups and may be medicated or otherwise treated according to the particular application of the tape.
Figure 5 shows a modified construction of the tape in which the vacuum cups are formed by perforations through the body portion of the fiexible tape 6. The strip 6 is backed by an adjacent strip 7 of resilient material impervious to air forming a closure for the vacuum cup 8. The active surface of the tape 6 is suitably coated or treated as at 9. In applying the tape shown in Figs. l and 2 to a cri-operating surface the body portion is pressed firmly against the surface causing intimate contact with the adhesive or other coating 10. The resilient cups are pressed downwardly` eX- pelling the air therein as the tape is applied such that when the tape is in contact throughout its area the cups will tend to resume their normal position. This tendency produces a uniform pneumatic pressure against the body portion of the tape which combines with the adhesive component of the contact surface producing a resultant maximum adhesive effort.
it will be understood that the vacuum cups may be formed in any desired setion and that the number of rows of depressions depend only upon the conditions of use and requirements of the tape.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A5 an article of manufacture, a tape impervious t0 air having an adhesive con- 3. As an article of manufacture, a tape tacting surface and a plurality of resihent comprising a strip of material impervious 10 vacuum cups therein. to air u plurality of circular cups therem 2. As an article of manufacture, a flexible arranged with their concave faces in the 5 tape impervious to air having an adhesive under surface of Suid strip and an adhesive contacting euraqe @ind aplualy f Vifesilicoating on said undersurfaep entacur 'ouf "therei tfietbefi unformly throughout the area thereof FREDERICK J. BOSSE.
