To @ZZ whom t may concern.' c
Be 1t kno-wn that we, `DAVID A. CANTELON and JOHN ZUEFLE, subjects ofthe King oft Great Brita-in, residing at l-lensall, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and` useful Improvements in Shipping Cases for Eggs andthe like; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in shipping cases for eggs.
The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a case for shipping eggs, the body of which is formed from a single piece of material bent to form a plurality of tubes in which the eggs are to be inserted, together with means for retaining the eggs in the tubes, preventing their displacement and for retaining the material in the desired position.
Another object of the invent-ion is the provision of a case or crate for shipping eggs' such as above referred, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in use and read'- ily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present applicam tion, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the shipping case;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof,
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view;
Figure 4L is a plan view of the blank from which the body portion is formed;
Figure 5 is a plan view of one of the retaining strips;
Figure 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the end members are formed;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the end members completed; and,
Figure 8 is a perspective view of one of the dividing partitions.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates in general our improved eggcase or crate, whichxis formed from a single blank of material, shown at 11, bent to form a pluralityv of tubes 12, the edges of which are disposed inwardly thereof as at l raarste 13, tol prevent. the unrolling of the tubes, n
which are retained in position by the strips 14. The free ends of the strips lei; are notched as at for interlocking engagement, whereby they can be quickly assembled and will retain the tubes 12 in their desired positions.
The strip 11r from which the tubes are formed is provided with a plurality of openings 15 through which the eggs may be seen and which' serves the purpose of ventilation.
The eggs, which are shown at 16, are slipped in the ends of the tubes 12 being held in spaced relation by the partitions 17. These partitions 17 are of circular formation consisting of spaced plates 18 between which corrugated fillers 19 are placed to provide resiliency.
The end members 20 are formed from blanks of material shown in Figure 6 the inner edges of which are slitas shown at 21. They are then bent as shown in the position in Figure 7 and retained in such position by a strip 22. These members, when inserted in the ends of the tubes 12 prevent the outer displacement of the eggs. i
It should also be noted that the openings 15 may be 'also used for the purpose of candling the eggs in addition to ventilation.
F rein the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a shipping case for eggs and the like, is provided which will fulfil all of ythe necessary requirements of such a device, and it should be understood in this connection that we are not to be limited to the use of the case for,` shipping eggs alone, but may ship any other fragile articles desired.
It should be further noted that various minor changes in the specic details `of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the' appendedclaims, withoutydeparting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad vantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention,
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
1, The herein described shipping case coinprising a blank of material, rolled to form a plurality of complete tubes, means for re-y tainingthe blank of material in the desired formation, and means for retaining articles in said tubes.
2. The herein described shipping case, comprising a single blank of material, rolled at the opposite edges thereof to form a pair of tubes having the inner edges thereof disposed invvardly, of the tubes, retaining strips for holding the tubes in position, spacing members Within said tubes, and end members at the ends of thetubes for preventing the displacement of articles contained therein.
3. The herein described shipping case, for eggs and the like comprising a single blank of material having perforations formed therein, said material bent so that the opposite edges thereof are disposed inwardly, forming a pair of spaced tubes, strips surrounding said tubes, and having notches therein for interlocking engagement and retaining the tubes in position, spacing members Within the tubes consisting of spaced plates having corrugated material therebetween and end members of circular formation fitting in the ends of the tubes and having the edges thereoic split, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. t
yIn Witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands.y
DAVID A. CANTELON. JOHN ZUEFLE.
