v UNN'ED STATE? HARRY WALLER JONES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'IO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEKV JERSEY.
TOP 0R CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS.
Application filed December 2, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY IV. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tops or Closures for C011- tainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to closures for containers and has more particular reference to closures provided for insertion within the open end of the body, i. e. closures having a body and upstanding flange in engagement with the edge of the side walls of the body. An example of the character ofcontainer and closure in connection with which my invention is particularly adapted for embodiment is shown and described in the application of Vernon G. Snyder for containers, filed May 15, 1915, Serial No. 28292.
A principal" object of this invention is the provision of an efficient hand-hold or member adapted for engagement by the hand to unscrew the top and lift it out of the receptacle in which it is secured.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a closure embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section therethrough and through an end of the body; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same.
In the present instance a cylindrical fiber body 4 is provided with internal screw threads 5 near its upper end and the closure consists of a flat sunken body 6 and upstanding threaded flange 7, the threads of which engage with the threads 5 of the container body. -Above the threads the material of the flange 7 is bent outwardly at 8 to provide a horizontal flange part 9 engaging upon the upper end of the body 4. Thereabove the material is bent back in a bead or false wire edge 10. A hand grip or mem- Serial No. 264,998.
ber 11 extends from opposite points on the periphery of the flange and provides open-.
ings 12 through which the fingers of the hand may be inserted and disposed between the bottom 6 of the cover and the under face of the member 11. The edges 13 of the member 11 are engaged in the bead or wire edge 10 which holds them tightly in place. The member 11 provides means for unscrewing the cover or closure and for lifting it from place.
The ends of the hand grip member 11 are or may be widened, substantially as shown, whereby its ends are more securely held within the curled flange of the closure, so that great force may be applied to the hand grip without danger of detaching it from the closure.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container closure comprising a body having an upstanding flange provided with screw threads adapted for engagement with similar threads within a container body and bent down at its upper edge, and a hand grip extending between opposite points of the upper edge of said flange and having its ends clamped within bends of said flange to form a hand grip and permit unscrewing of said closure.
2. A sheet metal container closure comprising a depressed body and bottom, formed with screw threads around said body, and bent outward above said screw threads to rest on the top of the container, and thence bent upward, inward and downward to form a curl, and a hand grip extending across the closure above said depressed bottom and having both of its ends securely clinched within said curl.
3. A sheet metal container closure comprising a depressed body and bottom, formed Zontally substantially as shown and securely with screw threads around said body, and clinched Within said curl. 1 l0 bent outward above said screw threads to Signed in the presence of two subscribing rest on the top of the container, and thence witnesses.
bent upward, inward and downward to form HARRY WALLER JONES. a curl, and a hand grip extending across itnesses: the closure above said depressed bottom' C. GRAHAM,
and having both of its ends widened hori- M. J. OCoNNoR.
