UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS EEHR, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS OR POWDER-S FOR INFANTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,133, dated September 23, 1873; application filed September 12, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULrUs FEHR, of Ho: boken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, haveinvented anew and Improved Medical Compound; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a medical compound made of silicate of magnesia, carbolic acid, and oxide of zinc, which, by its antiseptic and antizymotic properties, serves, in a great measure, to counteract contagion.
In preparing my powder I take of silicate of magnesia one thousand parts; carbolic acid, one part, and, mixing them together, I add of the remaining ingredient, oxide of zinc, onefifth part. This proportion may, however, be altered, as dictated by the nature and complaint of the user, and the oxide of zinc may be omitted, or added only in aggravated cases, or for the use of adults.
When these ingredients have been thoroughly commingled my compound or powder is ready for use, and by applying the same on the sensitive parts of the human body such parts will be kept pure and free from putrefaction.
My powder is particularly intended for infants, and the same will be found of advantage for the prevention of small-pox, measles, scarlatina, whooping-cough, diphtheria, fever of all kinds, prickly-heat, hives, mumps, erysipelas, and other diseases of a similar nature.
By my compound a powder is produced which is easy of application, and which is exceedingly cheap, so that the same is within the reach of all classes of the population.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A medical compound, prepared of silicate of magnesia and carbolic acid mixed together, in the manner and about in the proportions herein specified.
2. A medical compound, made of silicate of magnesia, carbolic acid, and oxide of zinc mixed together, substantially in the manner and about in the proportion set forth.
