GRINDING AND ETJLISHING MACHINE.
Application filed April 5.
To all whom it may rmwern:
Be it known that I, Janus jeet of Great Britain, and resident of Butler, in the county of Butler and State of ennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding and Polishing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact deseription thereof.
My invention refers to new and useful improvements in machines for grinding and polishing slabs or plates of material. such for example as marble, glass or the like, and the invention particularly pertains to murhines of the above character as disclosed in my patent for improvements in grinding and polishing machines, No. 1,375,121 pair ented April 19, 1921.
The particular object of my present iii-- vention is to provide a plurality of hurnislr in shoes having a compound planetary action upon the Work, whereby the time rcquired for eompletinga grinding and polishing operation is materially reduced, thus increasing the efficiency of the machine to a maximum without materially increasing the cost thereof.
\Vit-h the above and other minor objects in View, the invention consists in certain of construction. eomhination of hereinafter set forth with refen ring illustrations and peculiarities parts as are enoe to the aecompan subsequently claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary seetional elevation of a grinding and polishing machine embodying the features oi my invention, the section being indicated by line 1-1 of Figure Figure 2 is a sectional plan iew of the same, the section being indicated by line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a diagrammaticbottom plan view 01' another form. ot' niy intention.
Referring by eharacters to the drawings, 1 represents an overhead frame. vrhieh frame is associated with a reciprocated table :2 for supporting the slabs to be burnished and polished.
The table structure in this case forms no part of my invention. The frame 1 is provided with a u bearing 2, an intermediate bearing .2 and lower hearing it" for a mastier driveshm hlountcd in the journal 2 is the huh v i drive gear wheel i. which CAmnn, a suh- 1921. Serial No. 458,859.
hub is in spline connection with themain drive shaft. Hence, it will be seen that the gear wheel 4 will impart rotary motion to the shaft 3, while at the same time said shaft is capable of longitudinal movement within the gear hub. The upper end of the shaft is extended through a threaded sleeve 5, whit-h sleeve is loosely mounted within the bearing a and engaged by the threaded hub of an adjusting gear Wheel 5'. The upper end of the shaft is supported by nuts or collar-.5 (3. which are in threaded union with said end, whereby a predetermined longitudinal adjustment of the shaft is bad, and the said main drive shaft is intermittently adjusted vertically by rotation of the gear Wheel .1 ahoul the threaded sleeve 5, whereby a seri s of hurnishing shoes to he hcreiiult'ter itielltti to. are mieromieally adjusted with relation to the face ofthe date to he bsrnished or polished.
The lower end of the main drive shaft 3 has secured thereto a. master head 7, which master head. shown in Figures 1 Hit} 2, at its outer end, is termed with hubs 7' t lat constitute journals for vertiraily disposed arbors 8. The upper ends of the arhors have secured thereto gear wheels 9., whiph gear wheels ar mesh d with intermediate gear wheels l that are journaied upon studs extending: from the master head. The gear wheels to are meshed with a master gear wheel ll, which gear wheel is keyed or otherwise secured to a sleeve portion of the frame hearing it".
In this e xempiifiration of my invention. it is understood that the master headis formed xith tour arms having a pair of arhors iournaled in each.
The lower ends of the arhors secured thereto hurnishing heads 12, which heads as shown in Figures 1 and. t are formed with 'itili of aru'is only. The ends ot' the burnish og lie-- 1: arms terminate with hearing slew lii which hearing sleeves form journals tor rer ieadlv disposed spindles 1-4. The lower end of each spindle has secured thereto a hurizishing shoe 15 and the upper ends thereot carry gear wheels 16. which gear wheeis are meshed with idle gear wheels 17. the same iit'll'lg loosely inur lltll tl upon studs that project from the arms. of the burnishing; heads. 'lllhe idle great." her-s l? are in turn meshed with 1 uxiiiar goal wheels 18, u" ii h near wheels are an- 8 have eaeh each oi low ally positioned with relation to the whore 5 and are secured to the lower ends of the master head hubs 7'.
Fromthe foregoing description it will he observed that when the main drive shaft 3 is rotated the nl'bors 8 hate imparted their to a planetary motion with relation in the axis of the master head, due to their train conn ction hack to the fiat rigear Wheel 11. flhr arbore 8 in turn cause rotation of the binnishing heads niirrrhy a. planetary motion is imparted thereto. lVhen this planetary motion develops about the main drive shaft. it would he voila-1W1 that the gear train connection between the auxiliary fixed. gear when! it) and the lmr- Dishing shoes, will cause said linrnishing;
7 shoes to revolve about their own axis, and at the same time the; will he rotated about the axis of their lmrnishing heads. lhns :1 double plnnetan movenn-nt is dcwloprd whereby the hnrnishing shoes are rapidly revolved so as to cover the surface burnished thoroughly and to thus increase the speed of the machine, as whole.
It follows that the burnish'lng heads carrying the shoes he revolved in either direction, depending upon an arbitrary selection of driving gears, and that this same result can 'be varied by difi'erent arrangw merits of the train of gears, with respect to the main drive shaft.
Referrin be observe that the urnishing heads are formed .with four arms, and in this exemplification of my invention, thefixed mas ter gear Wheel and fixed auxiliary gear wheel impart direct drive to the hu rnishmg shoes, whereby their direction of rotation is varied from the direction of rotation shown by the structure in Figures 1 and 2. words, in this last exemplification of my invention, the idle or intermediate gear wheels are dispensed with. Obviously, the train of gears for carrying out, my invention now be varied to produce greater or less speed,
particularly to Figure 3, it will and also to vary the dirction oi travel of llic hurnishing shoes with relation to their movement; about the main drive shaft.
While l have sl H1 and described certain memplilir-ations of my invention. as to detail. obviously I may. \xithout departing from the spirit ol it, vary the structural Matures Within the HHPU of the claims.
