Specification of Letters Patent.
'Patented Aug. 22, 1922,
Application filed December 6, 1921. Serial No. 520,293.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Josnrn A. RAYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Applicator Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brushes and it has more particular reference to what may be generally termed applicator brushes, that is to say, brushes with which are associated a container for the substance or material to be applied, said material being of a fluid, semi-fluid, plastic, or powdered nature.
More specifically this invention relates to brushes provided with a container for fluid or semi-fluid soaps, paints, varnishes, or the like, having a controllable feed to the brush proper, such as are used for shaving, painting, varnishing and analogous purposes.
The main object of my invention is to provide a brush of the kind referred to consisting of few and simple parts and by the use of which a predetermined amount of the substance to be applied can be readily ac-. complished.
Still further the invention aims to provide a brush of the type referred to which when exhausted of its fluid, semi-fluid or other substance can be expeditiously replenished without disconnecting the entire device.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a brush having a more or less resilient container, the collapsibility or resiliency whereof serves to eject the requisite amount of substance to be applied at any one predetermined time, means being provided for cuttin off the feed from the container to the bru h during the process of application.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will be later on more apparent, my invention consists essentially in the novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described, and more specifically defined by the appended claim.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings in which like characters of reference designate the same or corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1--is a central longitudinal section through a shaving .brush embodying my nvention; and,
Figure 2'is an elevation partly broken awayor 1n section of a modified form of container for'use with the brush as illustrated in the preceding figure.
Referrmgmore particularly to Figure 1 of the drawings which illustrates one form of my invention as adapted more particularly for use as a shaving brush, the numeral 10 designates a container or cylinder of rubber or other suitable resilient material whlch 1s provided with an end wall 11 centrally apertured at 12 and having a groove 13 therein to receive the correspondingly shaped head 14 of a metallic thimble or sleeve 15 formed with an inner flange 16 and fitted with a screw threaded plug or stopper 17 adapted to make a non-leakable oint therewith. At the opposite end of the cylinder 10 there is formed an enlarged head 18 in which is firmly bedded a flanged sleeve 19 having a longitudinal axial passage 20 therethrough and bifurcated outlet ducts or passages 21 leading therefrom, said ducts or passages being formed in a hemi-spherical head 22 for a purpose later on explained. Formed about the hemi-spherical head 22 is an externally threaded part 23 adapted to receive the brush head 24, said brush head being cupped or dished out at 25 to receive the bristles or brush proper 26, and it is centrally formed with a concavity 27 in which seats the aforesaid spherical head 22. This concavity 27 has fitted thereinto a soft rubber or other flexible material funnelshaped member 28 that serves to conduct the contents of the container or cylinder 10 into the middle of the brush 26.
In some instances 1 may prefer to supply containers of fluid or other substance ready for attachment to the hemi-spherical head 22, in which event I employ the means shown by Figure 2 and which consists substantially of a collapsible foil container or cylinder 29 having an externally threaded extension or neck 30 and hemi-spherical head 22' on which is fitted a screw cap 31' which when removed permits attachment of the neck 30 into the correspondingly threaded cupped part of the brush head 24.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that by slightly unscrewing the brush head 24: a desired quantity of the soap or other substance .contained in the rubber cylinder si a /n11; ii i 10 or foil container 29 can be readily ejected or exuded through the flexible funnelshaped member 28 into the brush 26, whereupon said brush head 24 can be quickly closed and the soap or other substance applied, it being particularly noted that the flexible nature of the member 28 in no way interferes with the manipulation of the brush. Still further it will be seen that the flexible member 28 conducts the soap or other substance directly central and towards the outer end or point of application of the brush 26 whereby a greatly increased efficiency in use is attained, wastage is prevented, and no metallic projecting part can be brought into contact with the surface over which the brush is employed.
' In the form of my invention shown by Figure 1 it will be readily understood that when the container or cylinder 10 is emptied it can be readily refilled by simply removing the screw stopper or plug 17. and pouring a fresh supply thereinto, said feature being of considerable importance when a liquid or powder is used.
Still further it isto be noted that due to the peculiar formation of the semi-spherical head 22 and seat therefor in the brush head 24: a very slight turn of said head 24 will accomplish the discharge of the soap or other substance through the ducts 21 into the funnel-shaped member 28 and brush 26. On the other hand when the brush head 24 is screwed down tight on the semi-spherical head 22, said discharge will be effectively economical applicator brush is provided, the numerous advantages whereof will be clearly apparent without further explanation or descri tion.
Obviously,- may provide a suitable case or envelope for the brush when not in use, such as a metallic cap or cylinder adapted to fit thereover and prevent damage to the several .parts as well as insuring a sanitai y device.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, a shaving brush having a base portion provided with a semi-spherical recess and a longitudinal bore in communication therewith, said recess being partially screw threaded, a member spherical head in screw threaded engagement with said recem and received therein, said member being provided with a longitudinal passage therethrough and radial passages communicating between the longitudinal passage and the recess and having two external annular flanges in spaced relation to provide an annular channel therebetween, and a resilient reservoir having one.
end open and adapted to snugly fitinto said annular channel and having its opposite end provided with a filling opening.
