Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July a, was.
Application filed September 8, 1919. Serial No. 822,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DWIGHT E. WATKINS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Sanitary Waste Basket, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to waste baskets or analogous receptacles, and an object of the invention is to provide a waste basket which embodies a movable water-proof container, which is detachably connected to a supportmay be removed, and replaced by a new clean container, when it becomes soiled or it is otherwise desired to chan the same.
Another object of this inventlon is to provide, a sanitary waste paper basket, which is constructed so as to permit its alteration to conform to-any desired color scheme, or for renewing the appearance thereof when desired, and a waste basket of such nature which is simple in construction, and may be manufactured for a relatively small cost.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved waste basket.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the waste basket showing the various sections thereof disconnected.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the improved waste basket, and
Figure 4 is a vertical section through a modified form of the waste basket.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generically indicates the main supporting body of the waste basket or analogous receptacle, which supporting body comprises a base 2 rality of upwardly extending rods 3 which have their up or ends connected by a suitable ring 4. he rods 3 form the sides of the supporting body of the basket, and while a particular construction is shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that any saitable type of frame work body or sides inay be provided for the body 1, without. departin from the spirit of this invention. The bo y 1 has a flexible insert 5 positioned thereand a plu-' in which may be made of any suitable type of flexible material, such as paper, or cloth and it is preferable to employ flexible material having an artistic design so as to add to the attractiveness of the appearance of the receptacle. This lining 5 may be of any desired color so as to cause the receptacle to conform to any room in which the rece The upper edge of t e artistic or decorative lining 5 falls over the ring 4 as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The lining 5 is held in place by the inner receptacle 6 which is constructed of any suitable rigid .material and issubstantially the same height as the main supporting receptacle or body 1 so that the inner waterproof receptacle 7 may have its upper edge folded over the upper edge of the inner rigid rece tacle 6 and also over the upper edges of the artistic lining 5 and the supporting body 1 as shown in Fig. 3.
he inner lining or waterproof receptacle 7 tacle is to be placed.
. is preferably formed of waterproof paper so as to prevent the escaping of fine waste, such as pencil shavings, dust or the likeas well as moisture or liquid from the receptacle or waste basket.
A confining ring 8 which is preferably constructed of spring metal or wicker is mounted over the upper edges of the main body 1, the inner receptacle 6 and the waterproof linin 7 as well as the artistic lining 5, confining tie upper edges of all of these respective sections of the receptacle in their proper position. The confining ring 8 may be attached to the outer receptacle or main support 1 of the waste basket or analogous receptacle, by the passing of string, ribbon or the like indicated at 9 through suitable openings in the ring and about anyone of the rods of which the sides of the supporting section 1 are formed. It is also to be understood that the ring 8 may be confined in its proper osition by the resiliency of the ma terial 0 which the ring is made, or by spring clips carried thereby, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing, a modified form of the invention is shown. In this modified form, the outer or main foraminous receptacle 1 is formed similarly to the receptac e or supporting bod 1 and has an inner receptacle 2 positione therein which is shaped to snugly fit the interior of the outer foraminous receptacle 1. This inner receptacle 2 is preferably formed of water-proof padesired color scheme in the per, so that when it becomes soiled or worn it may be thrown away and replaced by a new one, without considerable expense. The upper edge of the inner water-proof receptacle 2 is rolled over the upper ring 3 of the outer receptacle 1 and is confined by a spring or wicker confining ring 8*. The ring 8 is formed of resilient material and is held in place, by the resiliency thereof, preventing the accidental disconnection of the upper edges ofthe inner and outer receptacles 2 and 1 respectively.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention, but;
I claim:
1. A basket comprisin a supporting frame, the sides thereof eing formed of spaced rods, a waterproof receptacle detachably mounted within said frame and having the upper marginal edge thereof extending upwardly of the tops of said frame rods, a substantially U-shaped ring member adapted for-detachable disposition over the upper marginal edge of said receptacle to overlap the same adjacent the tops of said frame rods, said ring member having transversely spaced apertures therein, and flexible fastening members for engaging through the apertures in said ring member and about said frame rods for detachably holding said ring member in assembled relation upon the frame and receptacle of said basket.
2. A waste basket comprising an open framework provided with an upper ring member, a rigid receptacle adapted to be enclosed by said framework, a waterproof receptacle removably mounted within said rigid receptacle, the upper edge of said water proof receptacle being adapted to overlap the upper edge of said rigid receptacle, a resilient substantially U-shaped ring member adapted to detachably fit snugly over the upper edge of said waterproof receptacle with one leg engaging the inner surface thereof and the other leg engaging the rin portion of said framework, and means a apted to prevent the removal of said resilient ring member DWIGHT EVERETT WATKINS.
