Description

L. L. FREUND.
DOOR LATCH. APPLICATION FILED my 8. I920- Patented Apr. 25, 1922.
' citizen of the Spokane,
LOUIS L. FREUND, OF'SIOKANE, WASHINGTON.
noon LAT-CH.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs L. FREUND, a United States, residing at in Spokane County and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Latches, of
which the following is a specification.
door and the My present invention relates to improvements in door locks of that type employing spring projected sliding bolts operable by cam movement. accomplished through the medium of an element adapted to be pushed or pulled for the purpose of retracting the bolt to release the door.
he primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character'that is comparatively inexpensive in first cost and composed of a minimum number of parts for performing its functions in a facile manner; which may be applied to a door frame with slight expenditure of time and labor, and which is operable from either side of the door by a sirpiple push or pull on the actuating handle.
ith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel combinations andarrangements of parts as will be hereinaftermore specifically pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention is illustrated wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a sectional view on a horizontal plane through a door and part of the frame showing the lock of my invention applied thereto, parts of the device also being shown in section for convenience of illustration.

a door, and part of the look In the preferred form of the invention as closed end of the barrel 14, the tendency of Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view show- Specification 6r Letters Patent. P t t 5, 2 Application filed May 8, 1920. Serial No. 379,797.
through the door and intersecting the larger mortise 3. i
The spring projected, slide bolt, of the device is indicated as a whole by the number 5, andis of cast metal with a cylindrical or rounded body 6 having a reduced latch head 7 of conventional form, while at the rear of the bolt a reduced, cylindrical extension 8 is provided, all these elements being integral. Extending transversely through the body of the bolt toward the rear end thereof, is an open slot 9, atom end of which is formed an interior, wedge shaped lug 10 provided with opposed, diverging cam facesll and. 12, and extending' from the top of thebolt is fashioned a vertical socket 13 which terminates in the integral.
lug portion of the bolt.
to conform to the bolt and firmly secured in the mortiseto house and guide the spring projected, reciprocable bolt, which'is forced to locked position by the coil spring 15 disosed in the end of the barrel and surroundmg the rear extension 8 of the bolt. The spring bears against the shoulder '16 of the bolt and asthe bolt is retracted the spring is compressed between the shoulder 16 and the the spring bein to urge the boltoutwardly or project it to Iocked position. v p
The open end of the mortise 3 is finished with a mortise plate 17, and the transverse mortise 4:, at its ends is provided with rings 18, to afford a neat and finished appearance for the members.
At 19 the usual mortise is provided in the door frame and finishedwith the'mortise plate 20 to receive and coact with the head 7 of the slide bolt in usual manner.
As before stated the slide bolt is spring projected, and it is positively retracted through the vaction of a push or pull shank 21, reciprocable laterally of the through the mortise 4 and guided in its movement by the end plates 18 of the mortise. The shank is preferably rectangularin cross section, of oblong shape, and at its ends, at either side of the door is provided 105 with suitable handles 22 and 23, of duplicate construction, and secured to the ends of the body of the shank by screws 24. The shank is preferably of metal, andat one side is I centrallycut away, or cast with a earn 110 door erated locking device 28 WlllCll includes a cylindrical lock bar 29 to engage in the I cured wit socket 13 of the bolt.
In Figure 1 the bolt is held in projected position by the spring 15, and the. door is serelation to the door frame or door jamb by engagement of the bolt head in its mortise 19 in the frame. The bolt may be retracted from either side of the'door, by either a push or a pull applied to either of the handles 22, 23. If a push is applied to the handle 23, the shank is shoved in its mortise and the frictional engagement between the faces 12 and 27 results in pushing the bolt to the left in Figure 1 to retract it from the mortise 19, and as the bolt head is withdrawn from the mortise, the continued push theshank, in either direction,
on the handle swings the freed door on its hinges to open the same. The movement of is limited by contact of the end handles with the doorface,, which encounter the door before the cam face of the shank can pass over the apex of the wedge shape lug of the bolt 5.
As the bolt is retracted, the spring 15 is compressed between the shoulder 16 of the bolt and the end of the barrel, and the instant the pressure is released on the shank,
- the resiliency of the spring forces the bolt to -the right in Figure-1 causing 'the wedge closed position and the bolt simultaneously retracted, and then projected when the pull is released from thehandle 23, or the bolt may be retracted against the tension of the sprin .15 as the beveled bolt head slides over the ate 20 of the door frame, after which the olt is projected into the mortise 19 in usual manner.
From the above description taken in connection with my drawings it is evident that. I have rovided a door lock device which will per orm its functions with comparative perfection, which is durable, facile-in operation and withal comparatively inexpensive of roduction, and readily adapted for use.
avin thus fully described my invention, a
what I c aim as new and desire to-secure by Letters Patent is- The combination with a door, having a mortise and barrel therein, of a spring projected bolt fashioned with a slot having one wall formed as an interior wedge-shaped cam lug, a shank angular in cross sectlon and transversely reciprocable in said bolt, said shankhaving a notch to form cam faces complementary to said lug, handles, on the ends of the shank, a' reduced extensionand shoulder formed at the rear end of the bolt, Y and a spring interposed between said shoul-,
der and the closed end of said barrel.
In testimony whereof I affix mfisi LU-UIS L. F
ature.
