STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14:, 1922.
I Application filed January 20, 1920. Serial No. 352,690.
To ellwhomizfmay concern:
Be'it known that I, ETHAN I. Dorms, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsbur h, in the county of Allegheny and State of dennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip{ tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers,one object of the invention being to provide a structure in which the bearing member shall be univer-' sally adjustable to insure accurate alignment of the staybolt with its points of con nection with the'respective boiler sheetsand then be permanently united to the outer boiler sheet by welding, and to so construct said bearing member that it shall be capable of being mounted in the boiler sheet so that its outer end shall be flush with the outer face of the outer boiler sheet or sothat it may project outwardly beyond the same and to provide such a bearing member with a removable closure which shall be located therein. 7 Y
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists incertain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. "In the accompanying drawings,-l igure 1 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, showing an embodiment of my invention; Figures 2 and 3 are views showing different ways in which the bearing member may be connected with the outer boiler sheet; Figures 4' to 13 are views showing modifications.
1 represents anouter boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of a boiler.
7 in the embodiment of my invention shown in Figure 1, the outer boiler sheet is mad with an opening 3, a portion of the wall of which is rounded as at i, and the outer portion of said wall is made flaring as at 5.
bearing member 6, approximately hemi spherical in form has a mounting in said opening, the rounded exterior face of said bearing member having a universally movable or adjustable mounting on the rounded seat afiorded by the rounded portion 4 of the wall ofthe opening in the boiler sheet. lhe bearing member 6 is made with an opening 7 at its inner end for the accommodation of a stayb'olt 8 and said member 6 is made iiiteriorly near itsvinner end with a rounded seat 9 for the rounded head 8 0f the staybolt, the inner end of the bolt being secured to the inner boiler sheet in any suitable manner. I a
The bearing member threaded interiorly for'the reception of a threaded plug or closure 10 and a gasket ll may be interposed between'the inner end of the latter and a shoulder 12 in said bearing member. The plug or closure 10 is formed to providea clearance space 10 and it may be provided with an angular portion 10 to re ceive a wrench.
It will be observed that the outer end of the bearing member 6 and the angular portion 10 of the plug or closure are substantially flush with the outer face of the boiler sheet 1. The outer end of the bearing member 6 is beveled, as at 13, andthis beveled face forms, with the flaring portion 5 of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, a groove in which a weld 14 is located,said weld fixedly uniting the bearing member to the boiler sheet;
By mounting the bearing member so that it may be universally movable relatively to the boiler sheet, it may be adjusted in a man ner to insure accurate alignment of the staybolt relatively to its points of connection with the respective such adjustment shall have been effected the bearing member will be welded to the outer boiler sheet, as previously explained.
In Figure 2 I have shown the universally adjustable bearing member mounted on the boiler sheet 1 so that it will projectoutwardiy beyond the outer face of the sheet. in this instance a portion of the opening be rounded as at 15, to conform to the curvature of lower or inner exterior face of the bearing member and on which the latter is 6 is hollow and is boiler sheets and after portion seated and the bearing member is united to the boiler sheet by a weld he. The inner portion of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet may be approximately cylindri cal, as shown at 16.
The inner or lower end of the bearing member may be mounted on the boiler sheet as shown in Figure 3. In this instance, the major portion of the opening 17 in the boiler sheet may be made tapering and a narrow annular seat 18 tormel adjacent to the outer or upper end of the opening to receive the bearing member and on which the latter is universally adjustable,the bearing member being welded to tl e boiler sheet, as at 1 1 Instead of providing a closure having an angular, wrench-engaging enlargement located Within the bearing member, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 8, the closure may be made as shown at 19, Figure 5, this closure being made with an angular wrench-receiving socket 20 and the peripheral threaded portion extending to the outer end of the bearing member. l
in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 5 and 6, 1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of a boiler. The inner end of a st-aybolt 3 is secured in any suitable manner to the inner boiler sheet and said staybolt is provided with a head 4a which is connected with the outer boiler sheet by a mounting hereinafter described.
In Figure 5, the outer boiler sheet is shown provided with an opening, a portion of the wall of which may be beveled at 5 but the major portion or" the wall of which is rounded transversely of the sheet to provide a rounded seat 6* for the accommodation of the rounded exterior portion 7 of a bearing member 8, the latter being formed with an opening at its inner end for the accommodation or the staybolt-and with an interior seat 9 for the rounded head of the staybolt. The bearing member 8 is approximately hemi-spherical in shape and at its outer end is provided with a beveled flange 1O which lies within the opening in the boiler sheet and forms, with the beveled 5 or said wall, a groove which is occupied by a weld 11, said weld serving to fixedly unite the bearing member to the boiler sheet after said bearing member shall have been properly adjusted.
The hemispherical bearing member 8 is threaded interiorly and receives a threaded plug or closure 12 the latter being made hollow to provide a clearance space 15 for the bolt head, and with an angular portion 14 to receive a wrench. A gasket 15 may be located between the inner end of the pin or closure 12 and a shoulder 16" forme within said bearing member.
It will be observed that in Figure 5, the outer end of the structure is substantially flush with the outer face of the outer boiler sheet.
lVhen the structure is mounted as shown in Figure 6, a considerable portion of the same will project beyond the outer face of the outer boiler sheet,the opening in the boiler sheet being so formed as to provide a comparatively shallow rounded seat 17 on which the inner end of the rounded portion of the bearing member is mounted. From the inner end of the rounded seat 17, to the inner face of the boiler sheet, the opening in the sheet may be straight and have a diameter appreciably greater than that of the staybolt, as indicated at 18*.
That portion oi the bearing member which projects outwardly beyond the boiler sheet, is provided with circumferential recess 19 and the upper end of: this recess is counterbored to form a circular groove 20. Surrounding the bearing member and located in said recess and groove is a ring or gasket 21 of material to which a welding alloy will not cohere,such, for example, as mineral wool or clay. A weld at surrounds the bearing memberand the ring or gasket 21, said weld overlying the portion of the hearing member in which the groove 20 is formed and extending to the boiler sheet. The bearing member is thus fixedly welded to the boiler sheet, but the cohesive union of the welding alloy with the metal of the bearing member is of restricted area, so that said bearing member may be more readily cut away from the weld should it become necessary to remove said bearing member.
When the bearing member is employed as a flush mounting, as shown in Figure 5, the ring or gasket may serve as packing, and should it become necessary to remove the structure, this may be accomplished by cutting ofi the flange 10.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 7 1 represent-s an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of the boiler. The outer boiler sheet is provided with an opening, a portion of the wall of which is rounded to provide a seat 3* for a bearing member 4".
The bearing member P is made approximately hemispherical and its outer rounded face 5 conforms to the curvature of the seat 8* in the boilersheet. The inner end of the bearing member 4: is open for the accommodation of a staybolt 6 and in proximity to said open end. the bearing member is provided interiorly with a. rounded seat 7" for the rounded head 8 of the staybolt. The outer end portion of the bearing member P is threaded interiorly as at 9" to receive a plug closure 10. between the inner end of which and a shoulder 11 in the bearing member, a gasket 12* may be interposed. The closure 1O is provided with an annular flange or head 13* which overlies the outer end of the wall of the bearing member and the periphery of said flange or head 13 may be rounded to the same curvature as that of the external 'curved or rounded face 5' of the bearing member. Y The flange or head 13 forms, with a flaring portion 143 of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, a groove in which a weld 15 is located to unite the closure with the boiler sheet and the metal of this weld may extend to the upper edge of the bearing member.
Instead of mounting the deviceso that the outer end of the closure will be flush with the outer face of the boiler sheet, the bearing member may be mounted on a curved seat 16 in the boiler sheet as shown in Figure 8 and a weld 1'7 surrounding said bearing member uniting the same to the boiler sheet. If desired a shallow rounded seat 18 may be formed at the outer end of the opening in the boiler sheet to receive the inner end portion of the rounded exterior of the bearing member, as shown in Figure 9, and a weld 19 unites the bearing member with the boiler sheet. It will be observed that in Figures 7, 8 and 9, the closure is pro vided with an angular portion 20 which lies within the annular flange or head 13 and is intended to receive a Wrench.
In the embodiment of theinvention shown in Figure 10, a closure 21 is employed which is threaded into the bearing member and is provided with a comparatively thin peripheral flange 22 which rests upon the end of the wall of the bearing member and is united to a portion of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet by means of a weld 23 said weld also serving to secure the bearing member to the boiler sheet. The closure 21 may be provided with ribs 249 to receive a wrench and the outer edges of these ribs may be disposed flush with the outer face of the boiler sheet. In the construction shown in Figure 11, the closure 25" is similar to the closure 21", shown in Figure 10, except that'it is not threaded to the bearing member but its flangeQiZ is welded to the boiler sheet as indicated at 26 It will be observed that in all of the several Figures 7 to 11 of the drawing, the internal configuration of the closuresis such as to provide clearance. space 27* for the head of the bolt and it will also be observed that the head of the bolt may be ovoid in shape In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 12 to 15, 1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of a boiler. A staybolt 3 is secured at its inner end, in any suitable manner, to the inner boiler sheet 2 and the outer end of said stay bolt is provided with an enlargement forming a head 4 having a tapering exterior face, and this head is connected with the outer boiler sheet by means of devices hereinafter described.
The outer boiler sheet 1 is provided with an opening, a portion of the wall of whichis rounded to provide a seat 5 for the rounded outer portion 6 of a bearing member 7. This bearing member 7 is provided with a rounded seat 8 for the rounded external surface of a bearing ring'9 and this bearing ring is made interiorly with a conical or tapering wall 10 which conforms to the shape of the tapering enlarged or headed end 4 of the staybolt and on which said enlarged or tapering end bears. With the use of the bearing ring 9 inserted between the enlarged or tapering end of the staybolt and the interior seat 8 of the bearing member, the staybolt will be permitted to have the necessary swin incident to flexible staybolt structures and the necessity for providing the staybolt with a spherical or rounded head is obviated.
The bearing member 7 is provided interi'orly with a threaded portion 11 to receive the threaded peripheral portion of a plug closure 12. A gasket 13 may be interposed between the closure 12 and a shoulder 14 in the bearing member and said closure may also beprovided with an annular flange or rib 15 depending below said shoulder 14.
To facilitate manipulation of the closure,
the same may be provided with an angular portion 15 to receive a wrench.
The bearing member 7 may be beveled at or near its outer end as at 16 and this beveled portion forms, with a beveled portion 17 of the Wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, a groove in to fixedly unite the bearing member to the boiler sheet. It will-be observed that prior to the welding the bearing member may be adjusted to insure proper alignment of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets.
In Figure 13 I have shown the bearing member mounted in an opening in the boiler sheet in such manner as to project beyond the latter and in this case the bearing member is united to the boiler sheet by weld 19.
Having fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of an approximately hemispherical bearing member having an initially universally movable mounting coincident with the opening in the boiler sheet, a staybolt having a head mounted in said bearing member, a removable member providing a closure for the bearing member, and a weld uniting said bearing member to the boiler sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, a portion of the wall of said opening being rounded, forming a seat, of a bearing mem ber approximately hemi-spherical in outline which a well 18 is located and being initially universally adjustable said groove and uniting the bearing memon the seat in the boiler sheet, With its outer her to the boiler sheet, a closure for said end approximately flush with the outer face bearing member, and a staybolt having a 10 of the boiler sheet, said bearing member havhead mounted in said bearing member.
