Description
R. HOLLIS. I cusmon FOR HEADJRTESTS. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 14, I921.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
PATENT OFFICE.
REY HOLLIS, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA.
CUSHION roe nnanansrs.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Dec. 27, 1921.
Application filed February 14,1921. Serial No. 444,633.
'10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REY l'lioLLrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbare, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Cushion for Headrests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cushions particularl adapted to be used on the head rests of chairs of the character employed in the dental and other rofessions, and an object of the invention is to add to the comfort of the patient occupying the chair.
Anot 1er object is the provision of a sanitary covering for the head rest.
Another object is to provide a cushion of this character that can be readily detached from the head rest when soiled, laundried and again attached to the head rest.
Another object is to detachably connect the pad to the attaching members so as to facilitate laundrying of either the pad or the attaching members or both.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal view, mainly in mid section, of a cushion constructed in accordance with the provisions of this invention and attached to a head rest shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the cushion shown in Fig. 1 opened out flat, one of the attaching members being expanded to its maximum diameter and the other one being folded upon itself to expose to view the fastening members for detachably connecting the pad to the attaching members.
There is provided a pad comprising a cover or casing 1 and filling 2 therefor of cotton, hair or other suitable material. may be finished in any desired manner and, in the instance shown, it is quilted as indicated at 3. The pad, in the instance illustrated, is rectangular, but it may be of any other suitable shape.
Fastened to the cover 1 of the pad are at taching members i which, in this instance, are in the form of cupshape receptacles. Preferably, though not necessarily. the members 1 are detachably connected with the pad and, therefore, the under face of the cover 1 and the upper faces of the members 4 are provided with cooperating fasteners 5, 6 which, in this instance, constitute the wellknown snap or glove fasteners.
The members 4 are positioned substan- The pad tially midway between the transverse medial line of the if d and. the respective ends thereof and theyare adapted to receive the hnolrlilro head rests a commonly provided on the chairs occupied by patients in the dental and medical prr essions. These head rd-its a are generally ad stably mounted on a bent rod 2') in spaced relation as shown in Fig; 1 so that the bacl; of the patients head will lie between the head rests.
The members 1. are preferably adjustable in diameter to fit different shapes and sizes of head rests, and I secure adjusta bility, in this instance, by providing each of the members 4 near its rim with a drawstring 7. The drawstrings may be selectively positioned according to the size of the head rests, and for this purpose there are provided a plurality of ways 8, 9, 10 in the hems 11 defining the rims of the members 4. The ways 8, 9, 10-are different distances from the margins of the mouths of the members 4 so that the drawstring will be placed in the way 8 for a smaller head rest, in the way 9 for a head rest of intermediate size and in the way 10 for a larger head rest;
In practice, the invention will be applied to the head rests as shown in Fig. 1 and the drawstrings will be drawn taut and tied to securely fasten the cushion in place. lVhen the pad 1, 2 becomes soiled it may be unsnapped from the fasteners 6 and a clean pad of similar construction substituted in its stead while the first pad is being laundried. Or, if the attaching members 1 also require laundrying, they as Well as the pad will be removed. from the head rest and a clean cushion complete substituted while the detached pad and its attaching members are being laundried. In this manner a dentist or other person employing this character of chair for his patients may add to the phyei Ll and mental comfort and wellbeing of 111.: patients with small expense. If desired. a clean towel may be placed over the cushion for each patient occupying the chair, thus keeping the cushion clean longer and avoiding any chance of infection of one patient by another.
I claim:
1.. In a cushion for head rest, a pad, and attaching members fastened to the under surface of the pad and provided with means to contract them.
In a cushion for head rest, a pad, and receptacles attached to the under surface of the pad and adapted to receive the head rest-s of a dental chair.
8. In a cushion for head rest, a pad, receptacles adapted to receive the head rests of a dental chair, and means detaehably fastening the pad to the receptacle.
l. In a cushion for head rest, a pad, receptacles attached to the under surface of the pad and adapted to receive the head rests or" a dental chair, and means to contract the receptacles.
5. In a cushion for head rest, a pad, and
means on the under face of the pad between the transverse medial line of the pad and the ends thereof to detaehahly secure the pad to the knob-like head rests of a dental chair.
Signed at Santa Barbara, California, this 7th day of February 1921.
KEY HOLLIS.
