ORTHOPEDIC APPLIANCE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS STEPHEN DoYLn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orthopedic Appliances, of which the following is a specification.

My inventionrelates to improvements in orthopedic appliances for use with the spine.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved appliance of this character which is adapted to exert a pressure upon the spinal column in the lumbar region so as to maintain the vertebrae in proper position and relation, thereby relieving the associated organs and muscles of abnormal strains and restoring these portions of the body to normal position and condition thus remedying and eliminating the variety of diseases and ailments incident to such abnormal positions and conditions of these portions of the body.

Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain. novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which:

Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention it will be seen by referring to Fig. 1 that the appliance,

pressure ribs13 symmetrically arranged with 1 respect to the longitudinal axis of the appliance and with respect to the axis of the spinal column and adapted to exert uniform pressure on the opposite sides of the spinal column.

Means is provided for securing the appliance in proper position upon the wearer and preferably consists of a pair of fasteners 15 preferably in the form of resilient hooks adapted to cooperate with the body garment of the wearer and a single centrally disposed fastener 16 also in the form of a resilient hook and adapted to embrace and be secured to the belt 11. Below the central hook 16 and the belt 11 a transverse bar 17 is arranged and serves as a guard to prevent the appliance from being displaced upwardly and incidentally serves to brace the lower end of the back.

In the form. of my invention shown in Fig. 2, the bodyportion or plate 12 is provided with an extension designated at 18,

as at 19, and having a V-shaped recess therein, as shown.

In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 4c, the plate or body portion 12 is provided with an extension 22 reduced on curved lines 23 so as to terminate in a reduced end 24.

In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 6, the reduced extension is designated at 25, and is rectangular the same as the body portion or plate 12 although on a reduced scale. f

In all forms of the invention the reduced extension is disposed in use between the hip bones and centers the appliance and also enables the pressure ribs 13 which extend along the extensions as well as along the body portion to exert their action in this f re ion.
