' To all whom it may concern:
.Pencil Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to pencil attachments and has for its object to provide a finger engaging attachment slidably mounted on the pencil and adapted to be disposed adjacentthe sharpened end of the pencil so that the pencil can be held securely during a writing operation, particularly where carbon copies are being made and in which case the finger engaging member which. is made of rubber will cushion the fingers so that the hard pencil surface will not tire the fin ers. a
K further object is to provide a rubber sleeve for a pencil, said sleevehaving inwardly extending flanges adjacent its ends and adapted to engage the pencil,-thereby forming an air chamber extending substanvthe. sleeve: is so' constructed that it can be tially the entire length of the finger engaging member. Also to provide the finger engaging member with a reduced centrally disposed diameter and to-taper the sleeve outwardly toward its ends and terminating in annular outwardly extending beads, said tapering of the sleeve and outwardly extending beads forming means for preventing slipping of the fingers:
' A further object is to form an opening in the sleeve with a centrally enlarged portion so as to form an air cushioning space for additionally cushioning the fingers.
With the above and other objects in view 1 the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings I -Fi re 1 is a side elevation of a pencil showing a modified form of'the'finger engaging sleeve applied thereto.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 31, 1921,
Application filed July 8, 1920. Serial no. 394,689.
Fig. 2 isaselctional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 4 1 designates a conventional form of pencil and 2 the slidable rubber finger engaging sleeve. It has beenv found while using a pencil, particularly where the pencil is hard or where carbon copies are being made that the hardpencil surface soon tires the fingers,"
therefore by forming the sleeve 2 of rubber,
said sleeve will cushion the fingers and overi come this difiiculty. The sleeve 2' is provided with an enlarged annular rib 3, which may be utilized as an eraser and also forms means in connection with the tapered portions 4: of the sleeve for preventing slipping of the fingers on the sleeve during writing.
Sleeve 2* is providedwith a cylindrical bore "5, which bore is slightly larger than the diameter of the pencil and forms an air cushioning space for additionally cushioning the fingers when the annular flanges 6 at the 'ends of the sleeveseare in binding and air tight engagement with the pencil. -It will I be; seen that a finger engaging sleeve for pencils is provided which will not tire out the fingers and it will also be seen that each; other Substantially centrally of the sleeve as a whole, thereby providing a re.- duced diameter centrally of the sleeve as of 7, it will be seen that during a writing operation the fingers of the operator will be prevented from slipping in either direction.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is I The combination with a pencil, of a rub- I ber sleeve slidably mounted thereon, said sleeve having inwardly extending flanges adjacent its ends thereby forming an air chamber extending substantially throughout the length of the finger engaging member when said finger engaging member is disposed on a pencil, the exterior of said finger engaging member being reduced in diameter centrally andtapered outwardly toward its ends and terminatin in annular outwardlyextending beads, the orward end of the sleeve beyond the bead being conically shaped, the bead within the inner end of the forward end (if In testimony whereof I have signed iny the sleeve being outwardly spaced in relanameto this specification in the presence of 10 tion to the annular bead extending outtwo subscribing witnesses.
v wardly from said end of the sleeve thereby I JACOB L BROSOHART in connection with the tapered shape of the sleeve from its central portion toward its Witnesses: end preventing slipping of the fingers on JUANITA PROFFIT, the sleeve. H BESSIE BRUMMITT.
